Matadors Find Wins at Beach Winter Invite

LONG BEACH, Calif -- CSUN Women's Tennis opened the spring season at the Beach Winter Invite Jan.16-18 hosted by Long Beach State. CSUN collected 15 wins across doubles and singles competition over the three days of the tournament.

FRIDAY'S COMPETITION
CSUN squared off against the University of Denver on Friday in what was the Matadors' best day of the weekend. In doubles, Annette Robertson and Nicole West defeated Hana Becirovic Novak and Marley Lambert in a clean sweep, 6-0. Sofia Dermenjyan and Talia Harper defeated Claudia Martinez and Loiuise Wikander in dominating fashion, 6-1. Finally, in the last match of doubles play Friday, Emma Moratella Sanz and Sandra Isabela Arguelles bested Yunfei Cai and Natalie Cinkova 6-3.

In singles play, CSUN couldn't be stopped against the Pioneers, winning all six matches. West defeated Wikander, 6-3, 7-5. Moratella Sanz bested Lambert 6-3, 6-2. Dermenjyan won over Cinkova, 6-4, 6-2. Vitoria Solis Urdiales came out on top against Hana Becirovic Novak 6-1, 6-7(4). Robertson bested Martinez in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Finally, Arguelles def. Cai, 6-1, 6-1. CSUN only lost one set out of all the contests against Denver.

SATURDAY'S COMPETITION
On Saturday CSUN competed against Long Beach State, however the success didn't come as easily against the Beach as it did against Denver.

Cecilia Costa and Thea Jagare defeated Dermenjyan and West, 6-3. Paulina Franco and Johanna Hiesmair won over Moratalla Sanz and Argulles, 6-3. CSUN's sole doubles win against the Beach came when Harper and Solis Urdiales defeated Diana De Simone and Daria Malaescu, 6-3.

In singles' play, West owned CSUN's only singles win against Long Beach State. She won against Costa by a score of 6-4, 7-6 (4). CSUN went 0-5 in the rest of singles play. Jagare bested Moratalla Sanz, 6-1, 6-0. De Simone defeated Dermenjyan, 6-1, 6-0. Malaescu won over Harper 6-1,6-0. Badillo defeated Solis Urdiales, 6-1, 6-2. And lastly, Carpenter bested Robertson, 6-1, 6-0.

SUNDAY'S COMPETITION
On the last day of the invite, CSUN squared off against fellow Big West opponent Cal State Fullerton. The Matadors fell in doubles play but won all but one match in singles play.

In doubles, Emilie Lugon-Moulin and Chloe Schwarz defeated Dermenjyan and West, 6-3.
Martina Markov and Seha Yu bested Moratella Sanz and Arguelles, 6-3. Lastly, Milena Gevorgyan and Madison Schwarz defeated Harper and Solis Urdiales, 7-6.

In singles play, CSUN dominated. Moratella Sanz defeated Yu by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Lugon-Moulin defeated Dermenjyan, 6-3, 6-1 for Fullerton's lone win. Harper defeated Markov, 6-1, 7-5. Robertson bested Schwarz, 6-1, 6-1. Solis Urdiales won over Gevorgyan, 6-0, 6-4. To round out the Invite, Arguelles defeated Dana Kunza, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
