CSUN Opens Season With 7-0 Sweep of Caltech

NORTHRIDGE, Calif --- The CSUN women's tennis team opened up the 2026 spring dual season with a 7-0 sweep over the Caltech Beavers Saturday afternoon at Matador Tennis Complex.Â

DOUBLES
Â
The Matadors began the dual by taking the doubles point. Angela Ho and Nicole West opened up their spring season with a 6-2 victory over Carissa Gerung and Hannah Ramsperger on Court No.1.

On Court No. 2, senior Emma Moratalla Sanz and freshman Sandra Isabela Arguelles beat Anna Szczuka and Aoi Kunimoto, 6-1Â in what was Arguelles'Â first NCAA match of her career. The win sealed the doubles point for the Matadors.Â
Arguelles commented on playing and winning her first match as a Matador. "Today I felt so excited because it was my first match at this level. I felt so good playing with Emma. I felt both nerves and excitement, but overall good feelings about how I played. I just have to keep working on being consistent." Aguelles said.

In the last doubles match, Madison Shepperson and Talia Harper took down Tara Zhan and Katelyn Waugh, 7-5.

SINGLES
To begin singles play, West took down Szczuka for the second point of the match as the grad student from Tarzana won 6-0, 6-1 on Court No. 2. West commented on her win: "Everything felt good today. " West said. "Mind was good and my body felt strong as well. We had a lot of synergy as a team. It was tough with the wind, but we got it done. There were definitely nerves because of the first match, but as a team, we fought through it. Every match we play is getting ready for the Big West later on in the season."

Moratalla Sanz was the next to earn a point for the Matadors. The senior from Valencia, Spain defeated Ramsperger, 6-1, 6-2 on court No.3 as CSUN then took a commanding 3-0 lead.Â

CSUN's Angela Ho, playing at No.1 singles, a spot usually reserved for the best player on a tennis team, took on Gerung. Ho overpowered Gerung, winning 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the win for the Matadors to take a 4-0 lead.

The next match to finish was on Court No. 5. Sofia Dermenjyan defeated Kunimoto, 6-1, 6-3 as CSUN now had a 5-0 lead.Â

Harper, the senior from Santa Cruz, played in her first singles match since 2024 and she came up victorious. She defeated Polaris Hayes, 6-2, 6-2 on Court No. 4 to put CSUN up 6-0.Â
Lastly, Annette Robertson defeated Naya Kessman, 6-2, 7-6 (1) on Court No. 6 to round out the day.Â
