UC Davis Defeats CSUN 68-51 Despite Strong Fourth from Matadors

DAVIS, Calif --- The CSUN women's basketball team (6-13, 2-8 Big West) fell to the UC Davis Aggies (15-6, 8-2 Big West) by a score of 68-51 at University Credit Union Center Thursday night. Saray White and Alondra Lizama led the Matadors with 15 points each. The Aggies were victorious despite being outscored 24-16 in the fourth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN began the first quarter on a 7-2 run with back-to-back buckets from Saray White who drilled a three-point pull up jumper and a layup. Rita Nazario added two points as well as she drove in for a layup at the 7:45 mark. UC Davis then went on a 12-0 run with most of the scoring done by Nya Eps. The Aggies carried a 14-7 lead heading into the first media timeout. Davis added four more points to its run before Morgan Edwards drilled CSUN's second shot from distance to make it an eight point game at 18-10 with 1:31 remaining in the first. Both teams traded buckets as the scoreboard read 20-12 in favor of the Aggies heading into the second stanza.

In the second quarter UC Davis turned up the pressure on the defensive end. The Aggies limited the Matadors to six points total in the second quarter as CSUN had trouble scoring on the offensive end. UCD added 18 points of its own in the quarter as the Aggies carried a 20-point lead (38-18) into intermission.

SECOND HALF
CSUN opened the scoring with a layup from Jite Gbemuotor on an assist from Erika Aspajo. After a made jumper from Megan Norris, the Matadors responded with a three-point basket from Jana Canadell to cut the lead to 17 at 40-23 with 8:01 remaining in the third. UCD then countered with a 10-3 run, with more scoring coming from Eps who wound up scoring a game-high 27. The Aggies had a 52-27 lead heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Matadors posted their best offensive quarter of the night. White had 10 points in the quarter off three made field goals and two made threes. Davis countered with good offense of its own as the Aggies matched the Matadors in the points category. With 3:13 remaining, each team had 16 points in the quarter. Trying to build momentum for Saturday, CSUN caught fire, ending the game on a 15-2 run. Lizama was a big contributor in the fourth as well. She scored 12 out of her 15 points in the fourth as CSUN showed fight until the final whistle.Â
