CSUN Sweeps UC Riverside for Third Straight Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — CSUN earned its third consecutive victory Friday night, sweeping UC Riverside 25-15, 25-21, 25-14 in a Big West match at SRC Arena.
The Matadors improved to 7-8 overall and 3-2 in Big West play, picking up their third consecutive 3-0 sweep. CSUN put together a balanced offensive attack that produced 45 kills and a .289 hitting percentage behind senior Katie Kolar's 32 assists. Kolar also added nine digs, four blocks, and a pair of aces, while seniors Julia Bazylevych and Hailey Brockway combined for 24 kills.
Bazylevych led all players with 13 kills (.242), six digs and two aces and Brockway added 11 kills (.348) and four digs. Along with Bazylevych and Brockway, senior Iye Okolo had six kills on eight swings to hit .625 to go with five blocks. Fellow middle Tatiana Turgeon chipped in five kills (.300) and one block and libero Paige Sentes led CSUN with 12 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN set the tone immediately in the opening set. After Riverside closed within 4-2, the Matadors used a 9-4 run to open up a seven-point advantage at 13-6. Bazylevych and Brockway each delivered multiple kills during the run, while Turgeon added a kill of her own. The Highlanders trimmed the deficit to 15-10, but CSUN responded with four straight points to regain control. The Matadors closed the set on a 5-0 run, capped by a Kolar-Okolo block, and hit .375 while limiting the Highlanders to a .061 attack percentage.
The second set featured the match's only tie after the opening frame. CSUN held a narrow 7-6 lead before a 7-3 run by the Matadors forced a UCR timeout at 14-9. Bazylevych provided two kills during that sequence, and Okolo added a kill and a block. The Matadors led by as many as five at 17-12 before the hosts rallied back to within 18-16. But kills from Bazylevych, Brockway, Okolo and Kolar down the stretch gave a CSUN a 25-21 win and a 2-0 match lead.
CSUN delivered its strongest start of the night in the third set, bolting out to a 6-0 lead. Kolar opened the run with an ace, Brockway added a kill, and Bazylevych and Okolo combined for a block. The Matadors extended the margin to double digits at 16-6 behind a kill from Kolar and another block from Bazylevych and Okolo.
The Highlanders answered with a 5-1 run to trim the deficit to 17-11 before kills from Bazylevych and Keniya Cleveland sent CSUN on set-clinching 8-3 run as the Matadors finished the sweep with a 25-14 win.
