Panganiban's Grand Slam Lifts CSUN to 12-7 Win at Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif.---CSUN Baseball rallied from an early five-run deficit and powered past Saint Mary's for a 12-7 victory on Saturday at Br. Ronald Gallagher Stadium. Kyle Panganiban drove in five runs including a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning while Matthew Thomas, Matthew Pena and Cameron Calvillo each homered as well. James Voorhies worked the final 4.2 innings, striking out six and allowing one run to earn the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling in the series opener on Friday, the Matadors would have to play from behind on Saturday. The Gaels jumped on CSUN starting pitcher Traig Oughton in the bottom of the first, tagging the right hander with four hits and five runs, highlighted by a three-run homer from Makoa Sniffen.

Held scoreless through the first 10 innings of the series, the CSUN bats came alive in the top of the second. Calvillo quickly put CSUN on the scoreboard with a leadoff homer while Pena followed with a solo homer moments later. A Jehee Lee double and Thomas walk put two more runners on base before Colton Boardman reached on a sacrifice attempt. Panganiban drew another walk to force in a run, bringing the Matadors to within 5-3.

CSUN continued to chip away in the fourth, scoring its fourth run on a Boardman sacrifice fly, scoring Thomas, who had tripled earlier in the inning.

After the shaky start, Oughton settled down on the mound with two straight 1-2-3 innings. He retired the first two batters of the fourth inning as well, but Nick Allred broke up that streak with a solo homer. The Matadors would get that run back in the top of the fifth though on an RBI groundout from Calvillo before finally drawing even at 6-6 in the sixth when Andrew Becker came away with a timely two-out RBI single to drive in Trent Abel.

Voorhies relieved Oughton with one out in the fifth and proceeded to retire the first six batters he faced. Saint Mary's though ended the string with a two-out solo homer from Jared Mettam to go back ahead.

Trailing 7-6 through seven, CSUN again turned to the long ball in the eighth. A Boardman bunt hit along with walks to Abel and Will Linberg loaded the bases for Panganiban. On the second pitch of his at bat, Panganiban unloaded on a towering 427-foot shot to center field for a grand slam, putting CSUN ahead for the first time at 10-7.

An inning later, Thomas hammered a two-run homer to left field, stretching the lead to 12-7. From there, Voorhies would do the rest for CSUN as he pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth before inducing a double play and striking out Allred for the final out of the game.

NOTES OF THE GAME

CSUN improved to 4-2 on the season while Saint Mary's slipped to 2-3.
Panganiban has now driven in five runs in two games this season. He has a team-high 12 RBI on the year.
Pena homered for a team-leading fourth time on the year.
Voorhies scattered three hits with just the one run allowed on the day.
All nine Matador starters recorded at least one hit while five recorded two hits.
Abel has hit safely in five straight games.
