Cal Poly Defeats CSUN, 6-1 in First Dual of Big West Play

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal Poly Mustangs claimed the doubles point and went on to win five of six singles matches to defeat CSUN Matadors, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex. Sofia Dermenjyan provided the lone point for CSUN in her singles victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Cal Poly secured the early 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles contests.Â

At No. 3 doubles, Amy Leather and Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako earned a 6-1 victory over Madison Shepperson and Satsuki Ishikawa.Â

CSUN fought back and earned the next half point when Angela Ho and Nicole West secured a 6-3 win over Kennedy Buntrock and Jessica MacCallum at Court No.1.Â

It came down to Court No. 2 and the Mustangs outlasted the Matadors when Candela Aparisi and Natalie Lynch defeated Emma Moratalla Sanz and Sandra Arguelles, 6-4.

SINGLES PLAY
CSUN tied the match up after the first singles match finished. Dermenjyan defeated Natalie Lynch 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. The straight-sets win was the senior's fourth victory in singles this season and third win in a row.

Cal Poly regained control with wins at Courts No. 2 and No. 3. MacCallum defeated Nicole West 6-4, 6-3, while Aparisi posted a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Moratalla Sanz.

The Mustangs then went on to clinch the match when Buntrock outlasted Ho 6-4, 7-5 in a tightly contested match at Court No.1.Â

The longest battles of the afternoon came at Courts No. 4 and No. 6. At No.4, Alexandra Ozerets rebounded from a first-set loss to defeat Tallia Harper 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, and Sarah MacCallum rallied past Shepperson 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 to close out the match.
