CSUN Falls to Portland State, 8-5 on Final Day of Easton Classic

FULLERTON, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (1-4) fell to the Portland State Vikings, 8-5, Sunday afternoon at Anderson Family Field during the final day of the Easton Classic.
Amber Rivas led the Matadors with two RBIs while Vanessa Perez drove in a run as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Vikings struck first. After two consecutive singles and a hit by pitch, Mia Martinez walked with the bases loaded to make it a 1-0 game after the first inning.

CSUN responded in the next half inning with a run of its own. Rivas singled after a groundout to kick off a Matador rally. Isabella Valdez and Savannah Simons then both singled to load the bases full of Matadors. After a strikeout, Perez singled up the middle to even the score at one apiece.Â

PSU quickly retook the lead after four hits in the bottom of the second, three of which came with runners on base in the form of a double and two singles. The Vikings ended the inning with a three run lead up 4-1.

In the top of the third, CSUN struck back with its best inning of the day. Raegan Jackson begun the frame with a hit-by-pitch. The senior outfielder then stole second. Makenzi Padilla then singled through the left side and advanced to second on the throw, advancing Jackson to third.

Rivas then singled up the middle, plating the two runners on base as CSUN was now within one at 4-3. Moments later, Simons singled through the left side, and Rivas advanced to third. Rivas would eventually score on a wild pitch to tie the game.

Perez reached on an error by the second baseman and Simons scored on the play to put CSUN on top 5-4 at the end of two and a half innings.

In the bottom of the third, PSU's Gracie Toney homered to left field, tying the score once again at 5-5.Â

The last inning of scoring was the bottom of the fifth. The Vikings put up three runs via an RBI single, a fielding error, and a groundout with a runner on third.

NOTES OF THE GAME
CSUN travels to Saint Mary's for a three game series next weekend in Moraga, Calif. The doubleheader will commence with the start of game one at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, February 13.
