MORAGA, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (1-6) fell to the Saint Mary's Gaels in both games of a doubleheader played at Cottrell Field Friday afternoon. CSUN fell in the first game, 8-0 in six innings, as well as 3-1 in the second game. Savannah Simons drove in the lone run. Kaitlyn Tso pitched a complete game in game two, striking out five but giving up nine hits in the process on three earned runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
After CSUN went scoreless in the top of the first, Saint Mary's opened up its bottom half of the inning with a single and stolen base from Hannah Ferguson. Ferguson would then score on a Taylor Lane single to shallow left field, giving the Gaels an early 1-0 lead.
Pitcher Malia Williams then settled down and had a very strong next four innings for the Matadors. Williams retired the side in order in the second, third, and fourth innings. She tallied two strikeouts during her five innings of work.
In the fifth inning, Saint Mary's broke the door open on the game, scoring six runs. Three straight singles with runners on base added three more runs for the Gaels, making it 4-0 with just one out recorded. Alex Cutonilli grounded out to short with a runner on third to score the fourth run of the inning. After another runner scored on a wild pitch, Tori Cervantes doubled to left center, scoring the sixth run of the inning.
In the top of the sixth, SMC ended the game via a run rule when Victoria Castillo hit a sacrifice fly with a runner on third to give the Gaels the victory, 8-0.
GAME TWO
In the bottom of the first, SMC drove in the first run of the game. Sam Buckley doubled to center field and Ferguson scored to make it a 1-0 game through one inning.
CSUN quickly answered right back with a run of its own. Raegan Jackson started the inning with a single to right field. Vanessa Perez then executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Jackson over to second. Mackenzie Kila then singled to center field as Jackson was now at third base.
The next batter, Isabella Valdez, grounded out to the shortstop, but Jackson scored, tying the game at one apiece.
The score would stay that way until the bottom of the third when Saint Mary's added one more.
Two walks and a double put the Gaels in business with one out. The batter, Alex Cutonilli, reached on an error and the runner from third scored, making it 2-1 in favor of SMC.
The Gaels added another run in the bottom of the fourth. Ferguson hit the first home run of the year for SMC, a solo shot to deep center field. SMC's starting pitcher, Ella Thurmond, pitched a complete game against the Matadors, keeping the CSUN runners at bay for most of the contest. She tallied five strikeouts in the process.
