NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball rallied from six runs down only to fall in 10 innings to Cal State Bakersfield 8-6 on Saturday at Robert J. Hiegert Field. Freshman Vaughn Coleman hit a game-tying home run in the seventh inning while Cameron Calvillo also belted a three-run homer for CSUN.
Held off the scoreboard for five straight innings, the Roadrunners scored two in the 10th inning to break a 6-6 tie and pick up a victory for the second straight day. Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first three innings saw starters James Voorhies and Ethan Minaker toss scoreless frames with just one hit combined between both teams.
Bakersfield though finally broke through in the fourth inning. Hitless through the first three innings, CSUB broke out for six runs on four hits. Dusty Vela capped the scoring spree with a two-out, three-run homer to right field for a 6-0 lead.Â
CSUN was held off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth when the bats finally came alive. A Matthew Cormier one-out walk and a Coleman hit by pitch began the rally as Calvillo followed with a three-run homer to left to pull the Matadors to within 6-3. Moments later, Trent Abel singled and Matthew Thomas drew a walk to knock Minaker out of the ballgame. From there, Kyle Panganiban greeted reliever Jacob Gutierrez unkindly with an RBI single. Andrew Becker capped a five-run inning with a sacrifice fly to left to trim the deficit to 6-5.Â
In the seventh, the Matadors would catch the 'Runners with a leadoff homer from Coleman off Gutierrez to nod the game at 6-6.
CSUN threatened in the eighth and ninth innings but could not knock in the go-ahead run against Gutierrez. The CSUB right hander stranded two base runners in the eighth along with runners at the corners in the ninth to help send the game to extra innings.Â
Lucas Alaniz, who entered the game in relief of Voorhies in the fifth, kept the 'Runners off the scoreboard for 5.2 frames but ran into trouble in the 10th. Alaniz retired nine straight batters including the first two in the top of the 10th inning, however, the Roadrunners forged a two-out rally in the frame, closed by a two-run double from Brendan Thompson.Â
Gutierrez would retire the Matador side in order in the bottom of the 10th securing an 8-6 Bakerfield victory.Â
