NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball posted a 12-1 victory over Pepperdine in seven innings on Monday at Robert J. Hiegert Field. The Matadors used a five-run third and a seven-run fifth to produce their 12 runs. Five CSUN pitchers combined to limit the Waves to one run on six hits while racking up eight total strikeouts.Â
Eight of the nine Matador starters recorded at least one hit with both Will Linberg and Colton Boardman producing two hits. Kyle Panganiban would hit a grand slam in the victory.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Waves would push across the game's first run in the top of the third. After Charles Rogers worked two shutout innings and recorded the first out of the third, Pepperdine took advantage of two walks and a hit batsman with Jackson Banuelos on the mound to take a 1-0 lead. CSUN went to its bullpen once more with two outs and the bases loaded, bringing in Adam Christopher. The Northridge native minimized the damage by getting the third out moments later, keeping the deficit at one run.Â
CSUN would have a quick response in the home half of the third inning, batting around in a big five-run outburst. Following a Vaughn Coleman leadoff walk, Linberg and Andrew Becker each doubled to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the frame, Matthew Thomas ripped a triple to right center field to add to the lead while Matthew Pena looped in a double down the left-field line to score another. Jehee Lee capped the scoring spree with an RBi single for a 5-1 Matador lead.Â
The Matadors' biggest inning though came in the fifth inning when another seven runs came across, all with two outs. Boardman extended the inning by drawing a walk before Trent Abel doubled in two runs. A hit batter and two more walks set the stage for Panganiban who belted an 0-1 pitch over the left-center field fence for a grand slam and a 12-1 lead.Â
On the pitching side, Christopher tossed back-to-back shutout innings after the third including stranding runners at the corners in the top of the fifth. Freshmen Gage McCown and Jack Jones each worked an inning to close the game out, scattering a pair of hits between them.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"I was really happy with the way we pitched. We had two really good stops by Adam Christopher, a local Northridge guy who is pitching his heart out in his last season. A good job of passing the baton by our bullpen throughout the game.
"Our offense needs to get better because it keeps sputtering at the start of the game, first time through the order and they need to get better at being more in attack mode. We'll work on that but overall, we did a good job."
