SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.---CSUN Baseball dropped the finale of its weekend series at Cal Poly, 5-2, on Sunday at Baggett Stadium. Matthew Thomas racked up three hits and drove in a run while both Matthew Pena and Trent Abel had two hits each.
Â
The Matadors used seven pitchers on the afternoon as Charles Rogers started for the second straight day. James Voorhies tossed a team-high 2.2 shutout frames at the end of the ballgame.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN would break the scoring column first in the top of the third with three straight hits, capped by a Thomas RBI single plated Abel.
Â
A trio of hurlers consisting of Rogers, Zach Johnson and Cody Carson kept the Mustangs scoreless through the first three innings. Carson stranded three Cal Poly hitters in the bottom of third, erasing a two-out error on the field.
Â
The Mustangs though would not be kept down for long. Cal Poly rallied with two outs in the fourth to even the game up as Dante Vachini drove in Cam Holland with an RBI single. In another two-out outburst, Cal Poly picked up two more in the fifth on a Ryan Tayman two-run homer.
Â
After stranding two runners in the fifth and another in the sixth, CSUN broke through in the sixth with a Vaughn Coleman sacrifice fly. In the home half of the sixth though the Mustangs responded with a two-run frame, highlighted by RBI hits from Vachini and Nate Castellon.
Â
Voorhies would help slow the Mustang offense in the late innings. He entered out of the bullpen in the sixth and stranded a runner to end the inning while he pitched around a Mustang single in the seventh and two walks in the eighth.Â
In the ninth, CSUN would get the tying run to the plate after back-to-back singles from Abel and Jehee Lee with one out. However, Cal Poly closer Nick Bonn retired Thomas on a foul out and Andrew Becker on a grounder to end the game.Â
