Freshmen Lead the Way in CSUN's 8-6 Upset Win Over #6 Oregon State
5/1/2026 10:16:00 PM | Baseball
Freshman closer James Voorhies tossed 2.2 hitless innings, striking out three batters in earning his fourth win of the season.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors would go toe to toe with the nationally-ranked Beavers through Friday's series opener. CSUN lit up the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning when Coleman blasted a solo homer to left field for a 1-0 lead.Â
The lead though was short-lived as the Beavers struck back shortly after a CSUN error. The miscue came with one out and a runner aboard, giving the Beavers an extra out and an opportunity for Paul Vazquez to hit a three-run homer.Â
Oregon State would take a 4-1 lead in the third after a solo homer from Bryce Hubbard, but the Matadors battled back moments later. In the fourth inning, Rickman set the table by drawing a one-out walk before Coleman hammered his second home run of the night, this a time a two-run shot to pull CSUN to within 4-3.Â
After another homer from the Beavers' Easton Talt extended the lead to 5-3, but the Matadors once again had a quick response in their next at bat. Consecutive singles from Kyle Panganiban and Will Linberg opened the fifth inning, leading to a sacrifice fly from Matthew Pena in the inning. Moments later, Rickman stepped to the plate and belted a no doubt two-run homer to left to give CSUN the lead at 6-5.Â
Out of the bullpen, Gabriel Hernandez gave CSUN a lift with back-to-back shutout frames over the fifth and sixth. The Beavers though ended that string in the top of the seventh when Ethan Porter hit a pinch-hit homer to tie the game up at 6-6.Â
From there, it would be the battle of the bullpens as CSUN turned to Voorhies with a runner in scoring position and one out in the eighth. The freshman right hander worked out of trouble, striking out both Vazquez and Tyler Inge to end the frame. In the ninth, Voorhies tossed another scoreless frame, pitching around a two-out walk.Â
On the flip side, CSUN would be held off the scoreboard for four straight innings against the Beaver bullpen but finally broke through in the 10th. Singles from Pena and Rickman kicked off the 10th for CSUN while a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk soon loaded the bases. CSUN called on Trent Abel to lay down a squeeze bunt as the junior shortstop executed the play, allowing Daniel Behrmann to race home just under a tag. Two batters later, Panganiban battled to a full count before drawing a two-out walk to force in an insurance run, giving CSUN an 8-6 edge.Â
The Matadors sent Voorhies to the mound once more in the bottom of the 10th as the freshman made short work of the Beavers in a 1-2-3 inning to nail down the victory.Â

"Our freshman showed out today and led the way for our team tonight. Vaughn Coleman and Mateo Rickman carried the offense and James Voorhies closed it out for us. Their attitude is infectious and our team fed of it today."
