CORVALLIS, Ore.---CSUN Baseball gave sixth-ranked Oregon State all it could handle in an 11-inning back-and-forth contest, but the Matadors fell 6-5 on Saturday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Trent Abel finished with two hits and two RBI while Matthew Thomas drove in two runs as well. Six Matador pitchers saw action in the contest as Kody King worked two shutout frames and Logan Miller added 1.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Less than 24 hours after the Matadors stunned the Beavers with an 8-6 upset win on Friday, CSUN jumped on Oregon State in the top of the first inning on Saturday. After a leadoff walk from Kyle Panganiban to open the game, Thomas knocked him in with an RBI double for a 1-0 lead.Â
CSUN would be far from done in the early going as the Matadors manufactured two more runs in the third innings to extend their lead. The first two batters reached to start the inning before Will Linberg laid down a sacrifice bunt. An error allowed Linberg to reach base while Thomas followed with a fielder's choice to drive in a run. Matthew Pena hit into a sacrifice fly moments later to put the Matadors ahead 3-0.Â
The Beavers though fought back quickly in the bottom of the third. After a pair of singles placed runners at the corners, Bryce Hubbard put Oregon State on the board with a sacrifice fly. Later in the frame, Adam Haight evened the game up with a two-run single after the Beavers had loaded the bases. Adam Christopher would enter out of the bullpen in the inning, stranding the bases loaded with a strikeout of Tyler Inge.Â
The score remained deadlocked at 3-3 until the top of the sixth when CSUN came away with a clutch two-out hit. Andrew Becker and Vaughn Coleman set the table with one-out hits before Abel knocked both runners in with a single to left.Â
The Matador 5-3 lead would hold up until the bottom of the seventh as Oregon State picked up a two-run single from Bryson Glassco with one out to square the game at 5-5. Logan Miller though managed to limit the damage by getting Jacob Galloway to bounce into an inning-ending double play. Â
Each side would be retired in order over the eighth and ninth innings before CSUN threatened in the top of the 10th with a two-out rally. Matthew Pena kept the inning alive with a two-out single before Becker drew a walk and Coleman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mateo Rickman though would be retired by Isaac Yeager on a grounder to end the inning.Â
King gave CSUN strong work out of the bullpen with a clean ninth inning as well as a shutout 10th where he stranded two Beaver base runners.
However, Oregon State broke though in the 11th against reliever Cody Carson. A leadoff walk would come back to bite the Matadors as Paul Vazquez drove in that runner with a walk-off RBI double to send the Beavers to a 6-5 victory.Â
