CSUN Drops Rubber Match at #6 Oregon State, 5-2
5/3/2026 4:30:00 PM | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore.---CSUN Baseball came up short in the rubber match with No. 6 Oregon State, falling 5-2 on Sunday at Goss Stadium. Freshman Vaughn Coleman capped off an outstanding series with three more hits, finishing a homer shy of the cycle while Trent Abel drove in both of CSUN's runs. The Matadors were retired in order just once on the afternoon but stranded 10 base runners throughout the contest.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Contrary to the first two games of the series, the Beavers struck first in the early going. In the bottom of the first, an Easton Talt leadoff double set the table for Bryce Hubbard who delivered with an RBI single and a 1-0 Oregon State lead.Â
Freshman Charles Rogers, who opened the contest, induced an inning-ending double play to end the first, but the Beavers went back on the attack in the second inning against the Matador bullpen. Ethan Porter greeted reliever Traig Oughton unkindly with a leadoff homer in the second while three more singles would add to the lead. Tyler Inge capped off a three-run second inning with an RBI groundout as the Beavers led 4-0.Â
CSUN was kept hitless through the first three innings but ended that string with a two-out triple from Coleman in the fourth. Abel followed next with an RBI single to bring CSUN to within 4-1.
Oregon State responded with a single tally in the fifth on an RBI groundout from AJ Singer. However, that would be the final run of the afternoon for the Beavers. Zach Johnson worked three quality innings in relief, allowing a run while Ryan Ellis worked the final three frames, striking out three and allowing two hits.Â
The Matadors would leave runners throughout the afternoon including two in the sixth after singles from Coleman and Will Linberg. CSUN would break through again in the top of the eighth when Coleman stroked a double and Abel collected an RBI single. Later in the frame, Cameron Calvillo reached on a hit by pitch, bringing the tying run to the plate. However, Xavier Rios went down on strikes to end the rally.Â
After having base runners reach throughout the afternoon, the Matadors would be retired in order for the first time in the top of the ninth as closer Albert Roblez recorded the final three outs. Â
