2014
Keel competed in and started 16 games for the Matadors in his junior season, among the most in the regular season in the country. He compiled a 3.64 ERA in 94.0 innings on the mound. Keel struck out a team high 72 batters and kept opposing hitters to a .227 average. His best performance of the year came in a no-decision against Hawai'i when the left-hander struck out a career high 10 in 8.2 innings of work. With the double-digit strikeouts, Keel became the first CSUN pitcher since 2008 to strike out at least 10 in a game.
2013 - Big West Conference Honorable Mention
Keel built nicely off of his 2012 Freshman All-American status and cemented his place as the Friday starter for CSUN. Keel pitched seven shutout innings over Saint Mary’s and set a then-career high with seven strikeouts. Keel, the reigning Big West Conference Freshman Pitcher of the Year, conceded just four hits all afternoon. In a start at Washington State, he went 7.2 innings with five strikeouts and allowed just two runs. He added six strikeouts in 6.2 innings at Sacramento State and got a win over Utah Valley after striking out six in 6.0 innings. In the Big West Conference opener at Long Beach State, he went 6.0 innings with five strikeouts to earn the win for the Matadors. Against UC Riverside, he struck out a career-high nine batters in 8.0 innings of work to pick up his fourth win. At Hawai’i, Keel struck out five and allowed just an unearned run on five hits in a complete game victory. He followed it up with another complete game over Pacific and allowed just four hits in 8.0 innings against UCSB. Keel finished the year with a 2.59 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 93.2 innings.
2012 - Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year - Freshman All-American
Keel pitched 6.0 innings and struck out four hitters while not allowing a walk in his career debut at Sacramento State. Keel stranded nine runners and scattered nine hits against the Hornets. He made the first start of his career on 2/26 vs. Northwestern and pitched 5.0 innings, allowing four hits while striking out three for his first win. Keel started against San Diego State (3/4) and pitched 4.1 innings with three strikeouts in a no decision. Against Indiana (3/11), he struck out five and allowing just two hits over seven innings but did not receive a decision. Keel started the finale at Portland (3/18) and struck out two in five innings before being replaced after a weather delay. He pitched 5.2 innings with two strikeouts at St. Mary’s (3/23 - Gm. 2). Keel threw his first complete game at #13 Cal State Fullerton (4/1), striking out three and scattering nine hits while allowing just a first inning run for the victory. He went 6.0 innings with four strikeouts to earn the win at UC Santa Barbara (4/7). Keel came in as a reliever against CSU Bakersfield (4/24) and pitched 1.2 innings with two strike outs to earn his fourth victory. He then pitched 7.0 innings and allowed just one run against Long Beach State (4/28) but did not receive a decision. Keel pitched 8.0 innings and collected a career-high six strikeouts in the series-clinching win at UC Riverside (5/5). He matched his career high with six strikeouts in a 7.2 inning performance that earned him the win over UC Irvine (5/12). In his final start of the season, Keel pitched a complete game with two strikeouts in 8.0 innings at Pacific (5/26).
PALMDALE HIGH SCHOOL
Keel was a three-year varsity starting pitcher for the Falcons, helping his team to the Cecil Fielder World Series Championship in 2010, where he was named the Most Valuable Pitcher, and the R.B.I. World Series Championship in 2011. He was named the Golden League Pitcher of the Year in both 2010 and 2011 and was selected as the All-Valley Pitcher of the Year and named to the 1st Team All-Valley. by the Antelope Valley Press as a senior. In 2011, he led the league with a 1.32 ERA and 101 strikeouts and was also named to the All-CIF Southern Section Team. Keel graduated in 2011 with a 3.5 GPA.
