Mike Torie enters his second season as an assistant coach to the CSUN Track & Field teams in 2025-26. Torie serves as the team's throws coach for the men's and women's teams.Â
In his first season at CSUN, Torie coached Matador throwers to two podium finishes at the 2025 Big West Outdoor Championships in Emily Hutchinson (shot put) and Elijah Ignacio (discus) while Katherin Shipp-Davis reached the podium as well at the 2025Â MPSF Indoor Championships (weight throw).Â
Torie comes to CSUN after serving as throws coach at Simi Valley High School since 2012. While working with the Pioneer Throws program, Torie also operated Torie Tc, a private program in Simi Valley that works with throwers. While at Simi High, Torie's coaching achievements include a 2018 California State fourth-place finisher (Dexter Stephens), a 2012 Marmonte League Championship Discus sweep, 15 league champions, seven Ventura County champions, five CIF champions, two CIF masters champions, and five State Medalists.

From 2020-21, Torie served as throws coach at Moorpark College before serving as throws coach and a part-time faculty member at the university since 2022.

Torie also spent two years (2009-11) as the graduate throws coach at his alma mater, Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Mo. During that time, he also served as a Freshman Experience teacher at the university.

Originally from Marysville, Wa., Torie earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Lindenwood in 2009, before earning his master's degree in education from Lindenwood in 2011. Torie was a two-time state medalist, a five-team league champion, and a three-time district champion in the discus.

While a student-athlete at Lindenwood, he was a five-time discus champion, the 2009 Kansas Relays discus champion, a 2009 NAIA All-American, and the program's career discus record holder at 58.31 (191-4).Â

His post-collegiate career ended with a Top 25 USA ranking five years in a row in addition to a Top 100 World ranking five years in a row. Torie also competed at US Nationals in 2013, 2014, and 1015 as well as the US Olympic Trials in 2016. He owns a lifetime best in Discus of 63.12m (207-09).
