A CSUN alum ('06), Matt Warshaw enters his 10th year as Matador head women's water polo coach in 2025-26.
Warshaw is the longest-tenured Matador head coach in program history. His Matadors have been a perennial nationally-ranked program while the team has finished four seasons ranked in the top-20 in the country. He also holds the second-most wins in program history with 117 through the 2025 season.Â
During his time with CSUN, the Matadors have earned 16 All-American awards and 12 All-Conference honors. He has also coached four-time All-Americans Dorottya Telek and Anna Pal, both of which have set school records for goals scored and assists, respectively.Â

CSUN has achieved a high level of excellence in the classroom during Warshaw's tenure, earning 123 ACWPC All-Academic Team honors including a team-record 16 in 2021 while the program has received 72 Big West All-Academic Team selections.
In 2025, the Matadors recorded their third-consecutive winning season for the first time in a decade, finishing the year with a 16-13 overall record. CSUN began the year ranked No. 16 in the nation and maintained a national ranking for 12 weeks of the season. The team would also set a school record with 393 goals scored as a group.Â
Warshaw led CSUN to its most wins in 10 seasons with an 18-15 campaign in 2024. CSUN also finished the year tied for the No. 16 national ranking, the highest the program has been ranked nationally since 2015. Warshaw also posted his 100th career victory on April 5, 2024 in a 9-8 win over No. 15 UC Santa Barbara.Â
In 2023, Warshaw led the Matadors to a 17-win campaign. CSUN also finished the year ranked No. 22 nationally. Warshaw coached three All-Americans during the year, tying the school record, while Telek would be named to the All-Big West Second Team. Telek also broke the single-season scoring record and tied the Big West season mark with 101 goals scored.
In 2020, Warshaw helped guide the Matadors to a 13-6 season before the final month of the season was halted due to the pandemic. The Matadors won 12 of their first 16 games to the year, posting their second-best start in program history. CSUN once again finished the year in the Top 20 with a No. 19 ranking.
In 2018, Warshaw led the Matadors to 15 wins and a No. 19 national ranking following the year. The 15 victories were the team's most in three seasons, which included five over Top 25 teams. Sanchez became the all-time scoring leader in CSUN history as she received a second-straight All-America Honorable Mention and All-Big West First Team nod.
CSUN collected 12 wins in Warshaw's first season at the helm of the Matadors. Finishing the season ranked 19th in the nation, the Matadors faced a total of 21 Top 20 teams including nine Top 10 teams. Junior Madeleine Sanchez finished tops in the Big West in goals while she nabbed All-America Honorable Mention accolades along with a All-Big West First Team selection.

Warshaw became the fourth Matador head coach in team history in November 2016. He had previously been an assistant coach with CSUN in 2015, and that season the team finished 15-11 overall and 3-2 in Big West Conference matches. CSUN was ranked as high as seventh nationally during the season and finished in third place in the Big West Conference Tournament.Â
Before his time with the Matadors, Warshaw enjoyed an outstanding run as an assistant coach with Cal Lutheran University from 2003-2014. With the Regals, Warshaw helped develop the inaugural men's and women's water polo teams in 2003-04. In the pool, the team won a pair of NCAA Division III National Championships in 2007 and 2010 and Cal Lutheran added a 2009 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship. In 2009, the Regals also climbed their way to a No. 1 ranking during the campaign.Â
Outside of collegiate water polo, Warshaw has been the Director of South Coast Aquatics since 2004. Under his direction, South Coast Aquatics has added a swim program and a masters swimming and diving component as well. The year-round program, which teaches water polo skills and fundamentals, has housed numerous teams that have achieved tremendous success in the pool including a Bronze Medal at the 2008 Junior Olympics (14 & Under Boys), six San Diego Country Cup medals, a Hawai'i Invitational Championship and a fifth place and 10th place finish at the 2010 Junior Olympics for the boys (14 & Under) and girls (14 & Under) teams respecitvely.Â
Warshaw has served as an assistant with the United States Water Polo's Olympic Development Program in 2012 as he coached 12th grade boys. From 2013-14, he helped 10th grade boys in the California Coastal Zone. He is also a founder and former director of the Golden Bay Water Polo Club and he has completed time as Camp Director at the Conejo Recreation and Park District.
Warshaw earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications Studies with a minor in Speech at CSUN.
Warshaw resides in nearby Woodland Hills with his wife, Faith.
