SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - The CSUN men's golf team posted improvement each round as the Matadors ultimately wound up 12th in a record-setting edition of CSUN's annual Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club.
The Matadors posted team rounds of 293-294-290 to finish with a score of 13-over 877. CSUN was tied for 17th after one round, 14th after two rounds before improving to 12th. The Matadors were just five shots out of the top-10 which left head coach Jim Bracken a little frustrated.
"We gave some shots away at the end of the second round which hurt us a little bit," said Bracken. "We hung in there but it's still a lttle frustrating because this is our tournament and we're capable of playing much better golf."
The record setting came from the team and individual winners. The USC Trojans won the team title with a blistering team score of 31-under 833 which shattered the previous team scoring recond by 10 shots. USC, ranked 21st, posted team rounds of 275-280-278 to top 27th-ranked Arizona State by 11 strokes.
The Sun Devils did take home some hardware individually as Jon Rahm won his second Cullum title in three years with a three-round score of 13-under 203. Rahm, who now has four career wins, broke his own tournament record of 12-under 204 which he set in winning in 2012. Arizona State has now won three individual titles in the last four years.
For CSUN, junior Tim Snyder and freshman Joey Varnam were the low Matadors as each tied for 35th at three-over 219. Snyder sandwiched an even-par 72 in the first round and a one-under 71 in the third around a second round 76. Varnam improved each round finishing with scores of 75-73-71.
Michael O'Connor tied for 49th at five-over 221 with rounds of 76-71-74, Steven Molumby finished tied for 54th at six-over 222 with scores of 71-77-74 and Dodge Ward was 84th at 13-over 229 with rounds of 75-74-80.
The Matadors also had several individuals competing as Luis Calderon made his CSUN debut and finished tied for 79th at 12-over 228 with rounds of 79-75-74, Sam Engel tied for 90th at 16-over 232 following rounds of 76-75-81, Aden Louez tied for 94th at 18-over 234 with scores of 88-69-77 and Conrad White finished 107th at 32-over 248 following rounds of 88-79-81. Louez' second round 69 was CSUN's low for the tournament.
The Matadors wrap up the fall portion of the 2014-15 season Nov. 7-9 as CSUN travels to Hawai'i to compete in the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic.
