Own-Goal Costly in 3-0 Loss at No. 1 UCLA
9/28/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
The Matadors kept the top-ranked Bruins in check for much of the night, but found their defense having the success across the 90 minutes. Goalkeeper Adam Hobbs came up with a save in the 12th minute of play but from then on it was a total team effort on defense to keep the ball out of the net.
The Bruins were equally impressive defensively in the first half, limiting the Matadors to a single shot.
A missed clearance in the 37th minute, however, put UCLA ahead and forced CSUN to chase the match from then on. Nathan Smith sent a cross into the box from the left side of the field and a pair of Matadors converged for the header, but the ball skimmed off of their heads and redirected past Hobbs into the open goal.
CSUN came out of the halftime break on the attack and took four shots and won seven corner kicks in the second half alone. David Turcios recorded the first shot on goal for the Matadors in the 64th minute when his shot from the left side was knocked out of play on a counter attack.
Two minute later a corner kick for the Matadors fell to Juan Samayoa, who took a shot near the penalty spot and had it blocked by a defender just feet from the goal line. A series of corner kicks for the Matadors came with under 10 minutes to play, but CSUN was unable to find an equalizer late.
Following one of the corner kicks, in which Hobbs joined the action as an extra attacker, the Bruins were able to break the pressure. Stolz ended up with the ball deep in his own half and launched a shot from nearly 80 yards away that rolled into the open net to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead in the 88th minute.
The Matadors continued to throw pressure forward needing two goals, but the Bruins were able to counter one final time when Felix Vobejda and Stolz combined for the third goal of the match. Hobbs finished with two saves in goal for CSUN and five separate Matadors recorded a shot on the night.
CSUN will stay on the road for its next two matches as the Matadors begin Big West Conference play next week. CSUN starts things off on Thursday night at UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. before traveling to Cal Poly on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
