CSUN Powers Past UC Santa Barbara 84-48

After posting their first home win over UCSB since 1984 last year, CSUN posted its largest victory ever in the series Thursday night. The Matadors shot 57.4 percent (35-of-61) from the field and 50 percent (10-of-20) from 3-point range. CSUN's 10 3-pointers and field goal percentage were both its second-best mark in each respective category.Â
The Matadors built a 15-8 lead early, but the Gauchos climbed back to within one point (17-16) with 11:29 to play in the first half. From there, CSUN orchestrated a 17-0 run and eventually took a 41-25 lead into halftime despite a Gaucho 3-pointer at the buzzer.Â
In the second half, CSUN jumped out to a 16-2 advantage on a 3-pointer in from Katelin King with 13:15 to play.The lead continued to swell until the final buzzer in the victory.Â
The Matadors, who had 14 assists in the first half and 12 in the second, never trailed in the contest and the 26 assists set a new program Division-I record for a single game.Â
Boagni finished 8-of-11 from the field and made her first six starts. The eight field goals and 17 points were new career bests and the eight rebounds were one off her career high.Â
Cinnamon Lister recorded 14 points and knocked down two 3-pointers to go with two assists and five rebounds. Lister now has 123 3-pointers in 49 career games at CSUN.Â
Janae Sharpe scored 11 points to go with seven assists and four rebounds. Sharpe now needs three assists to claim second in program history with 341 for her career.Â
Ashlee Guay finished with seven points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals. She is now tied for ninth in Big West Conference history with 263 career steals.
The Matadors also got some great contributions from their bench, who totaled 33 points and 14 field goals. King had nine points on three 3-pointers, Jasmine Johnson had eight points and Camille Mahlknecht added six points and six rebounds.Â
Travis Newman knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the second half, her first career buckets as a Matador. Bernadette Fong scored four points and had three rebounds.
CSUN held a 39-24 advantage in rebounding for the game and scored 16 second-chance points. UCSB became the sixth Matador opponent to score 50 points or less and shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) for the game.Â
"I thought we did a great job executing offensively and sharing the ball," CSUN head coach Jason Flowers said. "Tonight was a great team effort that shows up in a lot of ways, but we still got work to do to be the defensive team we can be."Â
The Matadors now hit the road for five of their next six contests in Big West play. Saturday, CSUN travels to Cal Poly for a 4 p.m. at the Mott Athletic Center. Next week, the Matadors travel to UC Irvine (Jan. 22, 7 p.m.) and Long Beach State (Jan. 24, 4 p.m.).Â
