A Bernadette Fong lay-up with 6:33 left in the first half put CSUN up 29-20. CSUN missed its last five shots and had four turnovers after that bucket and that helped spur the Highlander comeback. Despite two free throws from Ashlee Guay with less than second left, UCR carried a 35-32 lead into halftime.Â
In the second half, UCR scored the first six points and led 41-32 with about 18 minutes to play. CSUN charged back behind baskets from Janae Sharpe, Camille Mahlknecht and Guay to close within four points with 10:42 to play.Â
The Highlanders responded with another scoring run, outscoring the Matadors 15-2 over the next five minutes of game action. The lead eventually swelled to 20 points with 3:47 to play before the Matadors valiantly made one final push.
Guay finished with 15 points on 5-of-16 shooting from the field. She added six rebounds and three assists and passed former teammate Jasmine Erving for second in school history with 1,540 career points.
Sharpe scored 11 points and had a team-high four assists. Cinnamon Lister posted 12 points, four rebounds and two 3-pointers. She has made 135 3-pointers in 53 games as a Matador. Tessa Boagni led CSUN with nine rebounds.
As a team, the Matadors shot 32.3 percent (20-of-62) from the field and a season-low 14.3 percent (2-of-14) from 3-point range. The Matadors won the rebounding battle 43-40, but UCR finished with more second-chance points (10-7) and points in the paint (30-28).Â
Brittany Crain led UCR with 29 points while Annelise Ito had 16 points and eight rebounds.
CSUN hits the road for its next two games, traveling to Hawai'i for a contest on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. (PT) / 5 p.m. (HT). On Feb. 5, CSUN travels to UC Davis to take on the Aggies in a 7 p.m. contest.Â
The Matadors' next home game will be on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 4 p.m. against Cal State Fullerton.Â
