SIMI VALLEY, CA - The CSUN men's golf team struggled through the opening two rounds of the Bill Cullum Invitational Monday as the Matadors sit 16th at 607.
In the 20th year of hosting the Cullum Invitational in one form or another, CSUN has never finished last in the team field. The Matadors opened with a team round of 303 and dropped one shot in the afternoon round posting a 304.
"It's certainly disappointing to play the way we did because I know we're a better team than we showed today," said head coach Jim Bracken. "We'll see if we can show some signs of life  tomorrow and build up some positive momentum heading into Pacific's tournament next week."
The Matadors do not have a player in the top 40 individually as junior Felix Mory is tied for 42nd at three-over 147. Mory fired an even-par 72 in the morning round before posting a three-over 75 in the afternoon. Mory was the only CSUN player to post a round of even par or better with his first round 72.
Sophomore Joey Varnam, playing as an individual, is tied for 51st at four-over 148 after rounds of 73-75 while fellow individual Tomas Skajem is tied for 69th at eight-over 152 following consecutive rounds of 76.
A majority of the Matador squad is in the mid-70s as Aaron Grimes and Tim Snyder are tied for 74th at nine-over 153. Grimes carded rounds of 77-76 while Snyder posted the reverse 76-77. Luis Calderon is tied for 79th at 10-over 154 (78-76) and Sam Engel is tied for 81st at 11-over 155 (78-77). Conrad White, CSUN's third individual, is 92nd at 26-over 170 following rounds of 84-86.
In the team race, Loyola Marymount (559) charged three spots up the leaderboard in the second round as the Lions posted a 12-under score of 276. Seattle (562) is second followed by Santa Clara (564), Pepperdine (568) and Cal Poly (571) in the top five. Pepperdine had the low team round of the day as the Waves carded a second round 14-under 274 to move up from 13th to fourth.
Individually, Seattle's Joe Harvie is 10-under through 36 holes as he carded rounds of 68-66. Harvie carries a one-shot lead over UC Santa Barbara's Zach Smith (-9) into Tuesday's final round.
The final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
