SIMI VALLEY, CA - The CSUN men's golf team finished a disappointing 16th at the 2015 edition of the Bill Cullum Invitational Tuesday at Wood Ranch Golf Club.
After 36 holes of golf on Monday, CSUN was 16th in the 16-team field. Although Tuesday's final round was their lowest of the tournament, the Matadors could not move up on the final leaderboard. CSUN posted team rounds of 303-304-299 to finish at 42-over 906.
"Obviously I'm disappointed with our performance at our home tournament, but we can't dwell on it," said head coach Jim Bracken. "We've got to look forward to the next two tournaments at Pacific and Hawai'i."
Junior Felix Mory was CSUN's low scorer from start to finish after opening with an even-par 72 on Monday. That turned out to be the Matadors' low round of the entire tournament as Mory followed up with rounds of 75-76 to finish in a tie for 48th at seven-over 223.
Grimes matched Mory's 72 on Tuesday as the Matador junior moved up from 74th into a tie for 58th at nine-over 225. Joey Varnam, playing as an individual, tied for 67th at 11-over 227 following a final round 79. Senior Tim Snyder tied for 70th at 12-over 228 after scores of 76-77-75, Sam Engel tied for 78th at 15-over 231 after rounds of 78-77-76, Luis Calderon and Tomas Skajem tied for 84th at 18-over 234 and Conrad White finished 92nd at 45-over 261.
Loyola Marymount won its second Cullum team title and first since 2006 as the Lions (-22, 842) held off Pepperdine (847) by five strokes. Individually, Southern Utah's Fidel Concepcion carded a three-round total of nine-under 207 to overtake Santa Clara's Hayden Shieh (208) and LMU's Braden Baer (209).
CSUN is back in action next week as the Matadors travel to Stockton to compete at the Pacific Invitational at Stockton Country Club (Oct. 29-31).
