Papi Diouf Scores Game-Winning Goal in 75th Minute
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (8-7-2, 4-4-1 Big West) defeated visiting UC Riverside 2-1 Wednesday night in a Big West Conference match at Matador Soccer Field. Trailing 1-0 after the fourth minute, the Matadors got goals from Trevor Morley and Papi Diouf to claim the comeback victory and clinch a berth in the 2015 Big West Tournament. The Matadors reached the tournament finals in 2012 and 2013, winning in 2012, and have reached the Big West postseason in three of the past four years.
On a night CSUN honored its seven seniors participating in their final Big West game at Matador Soccer Field, the Matadors recorded their 18th-straight win when scoring at least two goals. The win was also the Matadors' first at home since the season opener against Loyola-Chicago on Aug. 30.
CSUN weathered a tough start to the match Wednesday. Following a CSUN foul, Ricardo Ruiz bent a free kick into the side netting from roughly 25 yards out to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.
However, the Matadors were able to claw back into the match and their offensive pressure netted a penalty kick in the 15th minute. Morley calmly drilled the ball into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season, all of which have come from the penalty spot.
David Turcios had a pair of good looks in the first half, but the UCR goalkeeper stopped a point-blank attempt at the near post to keep the match level at halftime. UC Riverside also earned a team save when a Highlander stopped a Turcios header off a corner kick. CSUN finished with eight shots over the first 45 minutes compared to four for the Highlanders.
In the second half, CSUN kept the Highlanders at bay defensively and broke through for the game winner in the 75th minute. Less than 30 seconds after having a header saved, Diouf drove home a long throw-in from Gabe Robinson to lift CSUN to the victory.
The goal was the first of Diouf's CSUN career and the assist was Robinson's first of the season. Diouf became the seventh different Matador to record a goal while Robinson is the 18th Matador to earn an assist this season.
In net, Adam Hobbs came up with several big saves to preserve the victory. In the 59th minute, he made a diving stop to keep the match level and finished the contest with three saves. With the win, Hobbs moves into third in program history with 29 career victories.
The Matadors finished with 13 shots in the contest compared to 11 for UC Riverside. The Matadors were called for 13 fouls and six offsides during the match and Patrick Hickman saw the yellow card in the first half. Two Highlanders were also cautioned during the contest.
Before the match, CSUN honored its seven-member senior class on the 2015 roster: Benjamin Asor, Victor Vasquez, Carlos Gonzalez, Tanner Snedigar, Turcios, Hobbs and Morley.
The Matadors now stand at 13 points and own second place in the Big West South Division. Cal State Fullerton defeated UC Irvine 1-0 in the other South Division contest to improve to 16 points for the league campaign. Based on tiebreakers, CSUN can still clinch a share of the Big West South Division title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big West Tournament. For that to happen, the Matadors must defeat the Anteaters and the Titans must lose at UC Riverside on Halloween.
The Big West Tournament starts with the opening round on Nov. 7. The semifinals are Nov. 11 and the Championship, which is broadcast live on Fox Sports Prime Ticket, is slated for Nov. 14.
CSUN and UC Irvine square off at Anteater Stadium at 7 p.m. on Halloween in the regular season finale.
