NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (16-9, 6-5 Big West) defeated Cal Poly 70-58 Thursday evening in a Big West Conference contest on The Blacktop at The Matadome. Ashlee Guay led the Matadors with 17 points, Cinnamon Lister added 15 and CSUN won its second-straight Big West game to improve to 6-5 in league play.Â
The Matadors entered Thursday's contest looking for a little revenge against a Cal Poly team that won their first meeting this season. CSUN left with its fourth win in its last five games with the Mustangs and its fifth-straight victory at home in the series.Â
CSUN controlled the early part of the contest, building a 38-24 lead at the half. Cal Poly actually led 24-22 with 6:11 to play in the first half after a lay-up from Hannah Gilbert. From there, CSUN went on a 16-0 run to close the first half.Â
Guay had eight points and Katelin King and Lister each had key 3-pointers during that stretch. The Matadors shot 41 percent (16-of-39) and hit five 3-pointers. Cal Poly finished at 34.4 percent (11-of-32) and missed its final eight shots in the frame.
In the second half, CSUN jumped out on a 9-2 run to take a 47-26 lead with about 15 minutes to play. The Matadors took their biggest lead of the game (58-36) on a 3-pointer from Randi Friess at 9:35 in the second half.
Cal Poly fought back and eventually cut the lead to eight with just over two minutes to play. However, CSUN hit its free throws down the stretch and pulled away for the 12-point victory.Â
"I think our focus is getting back to where it needs to be and we are getting back to what has been our identity," CSUN head coach Jason Flowers said. "You can accept the outcome when you get the effort and do things the way they need to be done. Cal Poly is a team that has a lot of tradition recently and they fought back. We were able to finish it out at the end."Â
The Matadors held an 18-0 advantage in fast-break points and connected on nine 3-pointers to just one for the Mustangs. The Matadors' bench also finished with a 22-6 advantage over Cal Poly.Â
