CSUN bests UC Irvine 82-60; Guay nears all-time records

NORTHRIDGE, Calif – The CSUN women's basketball team (18-9, 8-5 Big West) bested UC Irvine at home in the Matadome Saturday evening in a game it led from just a few minutes in. Senior Ashlee Guay inched closer to two all-time records, scoring 18 points with five assists as the Matadors defeated the Anteaters 82-60.
CSUN took its third straight from UC Irvine to win its fourth consecutive game as the team heads into the final road trip of the season. The win clinched a season sweep over the Anteaters; UC Irvine swept CSUN in regular season play last year.

"I think our effort is getting to the level that we expect for longer periods of games," said Head Coach Jason Flowers. "The results are starting to show. I think our best basketball is still ahead of us, but we're definitely moving in the right direction."
The Matadors' 18th win of the season ties last year's total mark for the team under Flowers. The 2013-14 squad won 16 in the regular season and two in postseason play. 18 is also the most regular-season victories CSUN has notched since the 1998-99 season, when the team won 19. This year's team still has three regular season games left to play.
Guay's 18 points on the night move her closer to first place on the Matadors' all-time career points list. She's now just nine away from leader Ofa Tulikijijifo, who has 1,632 to Guay's 1,623. Guay's new career total of 508 assists moves her to within three points of tying for 10th place on the Big West all-time list.
The Matadors started their second-to-last home game of the season going back and forth with the Anteaters, but Guay tied the score at 10 with a layup six minutes in, and CSUN stayed on top from then on. It held UC Irvine to 26 points in the first half, with Katelin King closing out the first 20 with a three-pointer for CSUN to make the score at the midway point 49-26. Â The Matadors were 19-for-35 (54%) shooting in the first half, while the Anteaters stayed on their heels going 11-for-23 (48%).
In the second half, UC Irvine came back strong to outscore the Matadors by one point, but CSUN maintained its strong lead, on top by as much as 32 with 13 minutes left on the clock. CSUN's early dominance held, and the Anteaters never got within striking distance.
Guard Janae Sharpe also notched five assists on Saturday and scored a total of 13 points, going 5-for-9 on field goals with four steals. Tessa Boagni was perfect at the free throw line (3-for-3) with 12 points, leading the Matadors with six rebounds. CSUN forced 18 turnovers and scored 48 in the paint. Cinnamon Lister and Camille Mahlknecht scored 10 points apiece and Jasmine Johnson went 100% on field goals (4-for-4) and contributed nine total.
For the Anteaters, Tierra Hicks notched 16 with two three-pointers and two steals to lead the team, and Shereen Sutherland also scored double digits (12) with three rebounds. Guard Raelyn Cheung-Sutton contributed eight assists and six points as the Anteaters shot 41% overall on the night and hit 11-of-16 (68%) at the free throw line.
The Matadors hit the road for two next week, heading to Cal State Fullerton and then UC Riverside before closing out the season at home against Long Beach State. Their next game is at the Titans on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7:00 p.m.
