Balanced Effort Leads CSUN Past Cal State Fullerton
2/7/2015 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
As the Big West season winds down, the Matadors find themselves back at .500 in the league with their eighth-straight win over the Titans. CSUN, who had shot a cumulative 25.5 percent in the first half of its previous three games, reversed that trend by finishing at 47.1 percent in the opening 20 minutes Saturday.
CSUN raced out to a 47-27 lead at the half behind that shooting effort. The Matadors led 17-5 roughly seven minutes into the game and extended that lead to 18 with about five minutes left in the half. Katelin King hit one of her three 3-pointers right before the buzzer to give CSUN a 20-point halftime cushion.Â
To their credit, Cal State Fullerton came out in the second half determined to cut into the lead. The Titans scored the first 11 points of the second half and cut the lead to 47-38 with roughly 14 minutes to play.Â
From there, CSUN uncorked a 26-4 run over the next eight minutes of game action to take a 73-42 lead with about six minutes to play.Â
Lister finished with 14 points and knocked down two 3-pointers. She added four assists and a steal in 25 minutes of action.Â
Boagni came off the bench to finish with 11 points, three rebounds and one assist and steal.Â
Four Matadors (Janae Sharpe, Ashlee Guay, Emily Cole and King) all finished with nine points. The performance marked the second-straight game that Cole has knocked down a career-high three 3-pointers.Â
Guay dished out a game-high six assists and added five rebounds and two steals. The two steals give her 276 for her career, tying her for seventh in Big West Conference history.Â
Camille Mahlknecht came off the bench to finish with seven points and four rebounds in seven minutes. She picked up block 273 for her career block to tie former UC Riverside great Kemie Nkele for fourth in Big West history.
The Matadors finished at 43.3 percent (29-of-67) from the field for the game and finished with more assists (19) than Cal State Fullerton had field goals (18). CSUN won the rebounding battle 44-35 and had 17 second-chance points. CSUN also got 21 points off 23 CSUF turnovers.Â
CSUN knocked down 11 3-pointers in the victory, the second-straight game they have finished with 11 treys. Chante Miles and Kathleen Iwuoha led the Titans with 15 points each.Â
The Matadors remain at home for their next contest, a meeting with Cal Poly on Thursday, Feb. 12 on The Blacktop at The Matadome. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and tip off is slated for 7 p.m. There will not be a stream from Big West TV for the game.Â
