CSUN Posts 5-2 Victory over UTEP To Remain Undefeated

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (9-0) defeated UTEP 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at Matador Tennis Complex. CSUN took the doubles point and the Matadors won the third-sixth draws of singles action to remain undefeated to start the 2015 season.
"I am really proud of how tough we were today at all positions and excited for Kristen to win the clinching point," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "The maturity of our team continues to grow and we will be tested in the coming weeks by several quality teams."
Thus far in 2015, CSUN is 7-0 against Division I opponents and also has a pair of wins over NAIA opposition in Westmont. At 9-0 overall, CSUN is just two wins shy of matching the 2001 team's 11-0 start. All 11 victories came against Division I opponents in 2001, the year CSUN won the Big Sky Conference title.
Sophomores Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei improved to 9-0 on the year in winning in the second draw. They are 26-3 (.897) in their year-plus as a doubles tandem at CSUN. Jessica Warren and Criss Rodriguez are now 6-2 on the year after winning in the third draw.
In singles action, Poei captured the winning point in the fifth draw with a three-set victory to improve to 7-1 on the year. Warren was the first Matador to pick up a singles point in the match, winning in straight sets to also improve to 7-1.
Rodriguez won in straight sets in the fourth draw while at No. 6, Kim rallied from an opening-set loss to win in three in the final match to finish. Both Rodriguez and Kim are 7-1 in singles play this season.
The Matadors return to action on Friday, Mar. 13 in a Big West Conference home match against UC Santa Barbara. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
