NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-
CSUN Baseball (18-5) used timely hitting and strong pitching throughout to sweep a doubleheader with Dartmouth (1-10) on Friday afternoon at Matador Field. Jerry Keel pitched seven innings in the opener and allowed one run in an 8-1 victory. Nick Blaser drove in three runs for the Matadors in game two, as CSUN held off the Big Green for a 4-3 triumph.
The Matadors scored in five of 14 innings on the day but were able to score three or more runs in three different frames to take control of both games.
"We are scoring big in individual innings but we are not scoring consistent enough," said Head Coach Greg Moore. "To the hitters' credit, we are taking advantage of opportunities when our opponent gives it to us."
In a contest shortened to seven innings, the Matadors were able to build an early lead in game one, taking advantage of a Dartmouth error to plate three runs.
After Nolan Flashman led off the inning with a walk, Blaser placed down a sacrifice bunt and would reach safely on a Dartmouth miscue in the infield. Later in the inning, Ryan Raslowsky brought home a run on an infield single and Nick Murphy drove in two more runs on a single to give his team a 3-0 lead.
An inning later with the score 3-1, Albee Weiss deposited a solo home run to left center for his second long ball of the season.
The Matador lead would be enough for Keel to hold, as the senior went the distance, striking out five batters en route to his third win of the season.
CSUN added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth for good measure, as the Matadors capitalized on two errors to score four times without recording a hit.
In the second game, CSUN again scored first, this time in the second inning. Blaser hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to make it 2-0 and Chester Pak added a third run on a sacrifice fly to score Weiss.
The Big Green responded quickly by scoring three runs of their own in the third on two hits to tie the game at 3-3.
The tie would not last long however, as CSUN regained the lead by scoring in the home half of the third on four walks. Blaser forced in the go-ahead run by working a walk with two outs in the frame.
Conner O'Neil pitched six quality innings in the contest, allowing three runs for the Matadors, and the quartet of Louis Cohen, Joey Deceglie, Nick Viola and Angel Rodriguez combined to pitch three shutout innings to secure the win.
Both Blaser and Nolan Bumstead had solid days at the plate. Blaser went 2-for-4, drove in four runs, scored once and hit a sacrifice fly. Bumstead scored twice and went 4-for-6 at the dish in his first two career starts as a Matador.
CSUN will conclude its four-game set with Dartmouth on Saturday morning at Matador Field. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
