NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-
CSUN Baseball (19-5) completed a four-game sweep of Dartmouth (1-11) by winning 7-1 on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field. With the win, the Matadors extended their winning streak to a season-high six games and they picked up their eighth win in nine games. Freshman Andrew Weston earned the first victory of his career by pitching seven shutout innings and striking out six on the day.
The Matadors' bats came alive in the series finale, as the team scored in six different frames and in each of the first five innings. CSUN cracked the scoring column in the first inning and never looked back.
"Our hitting performance was based on what the pitchers gave us," said Head Coach Greg Moore. "They gave us some free bases and we took advantage of that."
CSUN capitalized on Big Green errors in the first and second innings to plate single runs in each frame. Ryan Raslowsky hit a sacrifice fly in the first and Albee Weiss scored on a wild pitch in the second to give his team a 2-0 lead.
Yusuke Akitoshi drove in Nolan Bumstead with an RBI hit in the third and CSUN added a fourth run in the next inning on a sacrifice fly by Chester Pak.
The Matadors tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Elias Orona singled up the middle and brought home two to push the advantage to 6-0.
A seventh run came across the plate in the seventh, as Weiss rifled a single to left field to bring in Akitoshi from second base.
The huge lead would be more than enough for Weston, who had his strongest outing of the season by scattering five base hits over seven innings of work.
"[Weston] was steady enough and he kept us in the game," said Coach Moore. "His attack of each of his pitches was better today."
Weston encountered difficulty in the third inning, as the Big Green loaded the bases on three-straight singles with two outs. With the score 2-0 in the inning, Weston rallied back from a 3-0 count to strike out Michael Ketchmark swinging to escape the frame unscathed.
With CSUN's 7-1 victory, the Matadors outscored Dartmouth 25-6 over the four-game series.
"The physical investment is what jumps out to me," said Coach Moore about his team's four-game sweep. "Our players were playing every inning of that four-game series. To watch that and appreciate that is special."
CSUN will resume its home schedule on Tuesday, as the Matadors host CSU Bakersfield for a Tuesday afternoon game. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
