NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Two CSUN players finished in the top-20 as the Matadors made a final round push and finished sixth Tuesday at the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate at Sandpiper G.C.
Joey Varnam posted his best finish of the season as the freshman from San Diego tied for eighth at three-over 219. Senior Dodge Ward also had his best finish of the season, tying for 16th at nine-over 225.
Although he played as an individual, Varnam matched his season low for 54 holes after firing rounds of 71-76-72. His 36-hole total of 147 on Monday was also a season low. Ward finished with rounds of 75-77-73 for his best finish since finishing ninth at the Fresno State Classic in March of 2014.
As a team, the Matadors finished with a final round 298, their best of the tournament. Combined with rounds of 299-309 on Monday, CSUN moved up to a sixth-place finish at 906.
"We played a little most consistent golf today," said head coach Jim Bracken. "Northern Colorado was realistically the only team we could have passed so it was positive that we were able to accomplish that."
Aden Louez also posted his best finish of the season as he tied for 22nd with teammate Michael O'Connor. Both players finished at 11-over 227 as Louez posted rounds of 73-79-75 for his low 54-hole total of the 2014-15 season. O'Connor finished with scores of 75-77-75.
Steven Molumby was consistent throughout the three rounds as he finished tied for 27th at 12-over 228 after three consecutive rounds of 76. Tim Snyder and Aaron Grimes tied for 41st at 18-over 234 as Snyder carded rounds of 80-79-75 and Grimes finished with scores of 79-80-75.
Conrad White tied for 46th at 21-over 237 following rounds of 78-78-81 while Sam Engel and Luis Calderon finished at 26-over 242.
CSUN now has two weeks to prepare for the Big West Championship which will be played Apr. 26-28 at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
"The conference team will be set this week, then we'll work on some things over the next two weeks and see what happens," added Bracken. "The one thing about conference is your team could struggle all year and put it all together over three rounds and win the championship."
