NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN women's golf team opened the 2015 Big West Championship Sunday as the Matadors carded a team round of 307 and are in sixth place at El Macero C.C.
At 19 over-par, CSUN is just eight strokes out of the top four. Defending champion UC Davis is the first round leader as the Aggies posted a team round of 288. Hawai'i is second at 291, Cal Poly is third at 293, UC Riverside is fourth at 299 and Long Beach State rounds out the top five at 304. Cal State Fullerton (313) and UC Irvine (313) both trail the Matadors in a tie for seventh.
"I'm very proud of our girls today," said CSUN head coach Gina Umeck. "We bounced back a lot and are looking forward to the next two rounds. There's lots of golf to be played yet."
Individually, Elisabeth Haavardsholm and Arinda Bhanaraksa are the low Matadors after 18 holes. Each player opened with a four-over 76 on Sunday and both are tied for 18th place.
Bhanaraksa was four-over on the front nine but rebounded to finish even-par on the back nine. Haavardsholm matched Bhanaraksa with a pair of birdies, both coming on the front nine where she finished at one-over.
Senior Sharon Shin is one shot back as she opened with a five-over 77 and is currently tied for 23rd. Shin had a double bogey on her first hole and bogeys at No. 3 and No. 4 to finish the front nine at four-over. Shin then birdied the par-three 16th to finish the back nine at one-over and five-over for the day.
Cesilie Hagen also had a pair of birdies on Sunday but three double bogeys kept the sophomore tied for 27th at six-over 78. Rebecca Bostrom, competing in her first conference championship, is 40th after an opening round of 13-over 85.
CSUN will be paired with Long Beach State and UC Riverside and will tee off round two Monday morning at 9:40 a.m.
