Matadors Conclude Non-Conference Season vs. Toreros

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN Matadors (3-3-1) travel to San Diego to face the West Coast Conference's Toreros in their final non-conference match of the 2015 season. The Matadors are coming off a pair of road victories against WCC opponents last week, defeating Saint Mary's (4-1) and Santa Clara (2-0) to even their season record at 3-3-1. Last week, CSUN broke out of its shell with a pair of convincing road victories. Against Saint Mary's and trailing 1-0 through 20 minutes, CSUN reeled off four-straight goals to defeat the Gaels. Trevor Morley scored his first career goal to tie the match and Carlos Gonzalez added a pair of goals 24 seconds apart to give CSUN a 3-1 halftime lead. In the second half, Gonzalez added his third goal for his first career hat trick. David Turcios, Andrew Rizeq, Kevin Martinez and Dean Wright (2) picked up assists in the victory.Â
Two days later, CSUN posted a 2-0 victory at Santa Clara. After a scoreless first half, the game saw three penalty kicks called over a five-minute span. Trevor Morley scored his second penalty of the weekend and Turcios added his first goal of the season while Adam Hobbs stopped a Broncos' penalty kick in between the two to lift CSUN to the victory.Â
For their efforts, Gonzalez was named Big West Offensive Player of the Week and Morley was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week. After the six-goal weekend, the Matadors rank 85th in the nation in scoring defense at 1.43 and 80th in total goals with 10. The team's goals-against-average (1.24) ranks 94th in the nation and CSUN checks in at 73rd in shutout percentage (0.29).Â
A Closer Look at San Diego
The San Diego Toreros enter the week with a 4-2-2 record after posting victories over Cal State Fullerton (3-1) and San Jose State (2-0) last week. Following the match with the Matadors, USD travels to UC Santa Barbara for a match on Sunday, Sept. 27.Â
Marvin Schmiege had two goals and two assists in the two victories last week, raising his season total to a team-high eight points. Keegan Smith has scored three times while Darragh Vieyra and Torrey DeArmas each have two goals on the season. As of Sept. 22, San Diego ranks 12th in the nation with 15 goals and 38th in scoring offense at 1.88.Â
In net, Thomas Olsen has played all 760 minutes of action for the Toreros. Thus far, he sports a healthy 0.95 goals-against-average, 27 saves and a .771 save percentage to go with three shutouts. San Diego has conceded only eight goals on the season and have held opponents to 85 shots through eight matches, 27 fewer than it has attempted.Â
San Diego leads the all-time series with CSUN 15-10 although the Matadors have won two of the past three meetings. CSUN posted a 2-1 victory at home in the 2013 season and a 5-0 victory in San Diego in the 2012 campaign. The Matadors own a 5-9-0 all-time record in San Diego. Seamus McFadden is in his 37th season as the head coach at San Diego. The Toreros were picked to finish third in the WCC Coaches Poll, totaling just three points behind league favorite San Francisco.

CSUN is undefeated in its last 15 Â matches when it scores at least two goals, a streak that dates back to the 2013 season ... CSUN has 27 road or neutral-site victories since the start of the 2010 season, the second-most among all Big West squads ... senior Adam Hobbs has moved into fourth in program history with 11 career shutouts ... David Turcios has 19 career assists, the most among all active Big West Conference players ... Steven Manios leads CSUN with 13 shots on the season ... all three of CSUN's losses have come against teams currently ranked in the NSCAA Division I poll ... CSUN starts its 2015 Big West Conference schedule with a pair of home matches at Matador Soccer Field. On Thursday. Oct. 1, the Matadors host the Cal Poly Mustangs at 7 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. contest with UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Oct. 3.
