NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Women's Soccer (7-3) concludes its non-conference schedule with a pair of weekend matches beginning Friday with a road contest against San Diego at 5 p.m. and a home match with No. 15 Texas Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available for both matches. Friday's game will be streamed live on the West Coast Conference's network, TheW.tv while Sunday's home match will be aired live by the CSUN Sports Network through BigWest.TV.
Last weekend, the Matadors dropped a 3-1 contest at Santa Clara on Friday but rebounded with a 4-3 comeback victory at San Jose State on Sunday.
Falling behind 2-0 in the first 22 minutes of play, the Matadors fought an uphill battle for the remainder of their contest at Santa Clara. Despite outshooting the Broncos, 13-11, the Matadors were unable to come away with the victory.
Two days later, the Matadors suffered a similar fate in the early portion of the contest, falling into an early 2-0 hole to San Jose State. CSUN would go into the half trailing by a pair but fought its way back with scores from Ariana Tran and Kendall Moskal. The Spartans would answer back minutes later, however, to take a 3-2 lead. Trailing for the second time in the match, the Matadors mounted one final rally late in the second half. Cynthia Sanchez, who had assisted Tran earlier in the match on a score, recorded a pair of goals less than five minutes a part to lead CSUN to the come-from-behind win.
For her efforts, Sanchez earned Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks. Sanchez leads the team in goals and is tied for tops in the conference with Rebecca Wilson (Cal State Fullerton) with eight on the season. The sophomore forward is also tied for ninth in the country in goals recorded.
A Closer Look at San Diego
The Toreros are 1-6-2 this season and are winless since August 21. San Diego dropped a 4-3 decision at home to San Diego State last Friday and played to a scoreless draw at Oregon State on Sunday. All six of the Toreros losses have all been by a one goal. In its history with CSUN, San Diego is 9-3 including winning three of the last four meetings. The Matadors earned a 2-0 home victory in their last meeting with the Toreros in September 2014.
Junior forward Victoria Walker leads the Toreros in goals with three while fellow junior, Jacqueline Altschuld, has two goals and a pair of assists on the season. Senior Michelle Craft has spent the most time in net for San Diego, posting over 692 minutes. Craft has saved 33 in 2015 and has recorded a 1.43 goals-against-average.
A Closer Look at Texas Tech
The No. 15 Red Raiders are 6-1-2 this season and have won three straight matches. Texas Tech is unbeaten in its last eight contests including winning a pair of 2-1 matches last weekend at home against Florida Atlantic and South Florida. The Red Raiders are coming off a 2014 campaign where they advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. The Red Raiders are 1-0 against the Matadors all-time, posting a 3-1 victory at Texas Tech in September 2013
Senior Caity Heap leads the Red Raiders with three goals this season while seniors Alli Murphy and Janine Beckie, and junior Maddy Crabtree all have two apiece. Murphy was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 21. In net, senior Lauren Watson has started all nine games and has posted three shutouts, 33 saves and a 0.54 GAA.
