SIMI VALLEY, CA - The CSUN men's golf was fifth after an opening round 288 before carding a second round 291 to slip to eighth after two rounds of the Bill Cullum Invitational Monday at Wood Ranch Golf Club.
Despite sitting ninth out of 15 teams, the Matadors are well within striking distance of the top five as they trail fourth-place Long Beach State by just four strokes.Â
"Both rounds today were good, I can't be disappointed with three over-par as a team," said head coach Jim Bracken. "Most teams had at least one player score in the 60's, we didn't, but we were consistent so I'm pleased with that. I'm hoping tomorrow will be our round and we can pass some teams."
Senior Tavit Garabedian and Junior Trym Falch each fired a two-round 144 and are tied for 27th at even-par 144. Garabedian and Falch each fired an opening round 71 which was good for a tie for 15th before a second round 73 dropped the CSUN pair 12 spots on the leaderboard.
Junior Felix Mory is one shot back in a tie for 33rd at one-over 145. Mory opened with an even-par 72 and was tied for 28th before posting a one-over 73 in the afternoon round.
Sophomore Tomas Skajem was the only CSUN player to improve from round one to round two as he posted rounds of 74-72 and is tied for 39th at two-over 146. Senior Sam Engel rounded out the Matador lineup as he is tied for 87th at 15-over 159 (80-79).
CSUN also fielded three individuals as Michael Zhang is tied for 54th at four-over 148 (74-74) and Sevian Frangipange, making his Matador debut, is 91st at 24-over 168 (82-86). Joey Varnam did not start today's opening round due to an injury.
UC Santa Barbara blistered the field on Monday, firing rounds of 279-275 to lead by 14 shots at 22-under 554. UC Irvine also had a solid second round to move into second at eight-under 568. USC's Jonah Texeira, competing as an individual, carries a one-shot lead over UCSB's Willy Moffly and Southern Utah's Fidel Concepcion into Tuesday's final round. Concepcion is the defending Cullum individual champion.
The third and final round is scheduled to get underway Tuesday morning with a 7:45 a.m. shotgun start.
