Nautical Morrow Ties Career High with 18 Points off the Bench
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (1-0) defeated Portland State 99-72 Friday afternoon in a non-conference contest at The Matadome. All 12 Matadors who played scored in the victory while sophomore Nautica Morrow led all scorers by tying a career high with 18 points and sophomore Channon Fluker recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.Â
The Matadors and Vikings met to open their respective 2016-17 seasons and CSUN controlled the action for the majority of the contest. After the teams traded baskets and CSUN held a 12-11 advantage, the Matadors went on a 19-7 run to close out the first quarter with a 31-18 lead. In the second quarter, Portland State would get within 13 (41-28) but the Matadors closed the half on a 17-6 run to claim a 58-34 lead through 20 minutes.Â
The second half was similar to the first and CSUN built its lead up to as many as 31 midway through the fourth quarter. CSUN finished the game shooting 52.8 percent (38-of-72) from the field and 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from 3-point range compared to 33.3 percent (22-of-66) and 30 percent (3-of-10) for Portland State.Â
Morrow was a spark plug off the bench for the Matadors, finishing 8-of-11 from the field and 2-of-4 from the free throw line. She added two rebounds and four assists in 24 minutes of work. Fluker was tough inside all night, recording the double-double in just 21 minutes of work. She added three blocked shots in the victory.Â
Three other Matadors finished in double-figures in Friday's victory. Freshman Lizzy Tonks scored all of her 15 points in the first half and added two rebounds, two 3-pointers and three assists. Junior Tessa Boagni posted 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists while fellow junior Serafina Maulupe finished with 12 points on four 3-pointers. Maulupe added two rebounds, three asissts and two steals in 19 minutes.Â
Besides Tonks, several Matadors made their official NCAA debuts Friday. Hayley Tanabe came off the bench to record eight points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals. Lauren Shymkewicz posted three points and five rebounds while Terrin Sullivan had two points and two rebounds. Finally, Eliza Matthews came off the bench to finish with five points and eight rebounds.Â
The Matadors held a 51-40 advantage in rebounding and had 24 assists and 26 turnovers. Two Vikings finished with 12 points in defeat.Â
Friday's victory is the Matadors' first against their former Big Sky Conference rival since the 2006-07 season and ties the all-time series at 11-11. The Matadors' 99 points set a new progrm Division I record and is the most by a CSUN team since a 104-60 victory over Chapman on Jan. 12, 1980.Â
CSUN will return to action on Monday, Nov. 14 with a 7 p.m. contest against San Diego in The Matadome.Â
