Junior Tessa Boagni Grabs Career-High 14 Rebounds to Go with 11 Points
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (1-1) lost 76-67 to San Diego Monday night at The Blacktop at The Matadome. Junior Tessa Boagni grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds to go with 11 points and three blocks, sophomore Channon Fluker had 18 points and 10 rebounds but the visiting Toreros used a late spurt to secure the victory.Â
Looking for their first win over the Toreros since the 2000-01 season, the Matadors fell just short Monday night. In a game that featured eight ties and 13 lead changes, turnovers and fouls hurt CSUN all night and at the end of the contest. Trailing by three with less than two minutes to play, a CSUN turnover resulted in an old-fashioned three-point play for San Diego. Down six, the Matadors had an empty possession on their next trip down the floor and a USD lay-up with 53 seconds sealed the victory.Â
CSUN finished with 20 turnovers and the miscues resulted in 26 points for San Diego. USD also finished 18-of-28 from the free throw line off 23 Matador fouls, making more from the charity stripe than CSUN had attempts (8-of-9).Â
Boagni tied a career high by playing 36 minutes and set a new career best in rebounding with 12 defensive boards and two on the offensive glass. She finished 4-of-11 from the field to record her third career double-double and her three blocked shots tied a career high for the fourth time.Â
Fluker was 7-of-10 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line and grabbed 10 boards to record her second double-double in as many games. Her four rejections was one short of her career best.Â
Freshman Lizzy Tonks was the third Matador to finish in double-figures, scoring 12 points to go with four assists, a block and a rebound. She played 31 minutes Monday and through two games is averaging 13.5 points and 3.5 assists.Â
Junior Serafina Maulupe finished with seven points, five rebounds and four assists in 26 minutes and freshman Eliza Matthews had six points and two rebounds off the bench.Â
CSUN shot 42.2 percent (27-of-64) from the field and 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from 3-point range, The Matadors held a 44-43 advantage in rebounding, but the Toreros grabbed 18 offensive rebounds to post 16 second-chance points.
The Matadors hit the road for their next two contests, traveling to face the Fresno State Bulldogs (Nov. 18) and Stanford (Nov. 20). CSUN returns to The Matadome to host its Radisson Hotel Chatsworth Thanksgiving Basketball Classic 2016 on Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26. The Matadors will welcome the Michigan State Spartans, Detroit Mercy Titans and Delaware Blue Hens to the San Fernando Valley for two games each day.
