CSUN Stages Comeback to Post Historic Win at Fresno State

Freshman Hayley Tanabe Leads CSUN with 14 Points in Victory
FRESNO, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (2-1) defeated Fresno State 61-57 at the Save Mart Center Friday evening. Trailing 33-18 at halftime, the Matadors stunned the Bulldogs with a 20-2 run over the final seven-plus minutes of the fourth period to send CSUN to its first win in the series since 1975. Â Freshman Hayley Tanabe scored 13 of her team-high 14 points after halftime and knocked down three 3-pointers while Channon Fluker tied a career high with 19 rebounds and added to 12 points to post her third-straight double-double.Â
"The team showed a lot of confidence tonight. We weren't very effective offensively for 30 minutes or so and they stayed with it," said CSUN head coach Jason Flowers. "We pulled together in the second half and got big plays from multiple people down the stretch. Hayley Tanabe was huge all night for us. She played 38 minutes, had a 4:1 assist-to-turnover ratio and really brought us back into the game in the second half. This was good win from standpoint in that wasn't pretty, but the group found a way to get it done."
Friday's evening contest was a tale of two halves for the Matadors. In the first 20 minutes, CSUN shot 18.4 percent (7-of-38) and missed its first 10 3-point attempts. The Matadors trailed 26-9 with 3:42 left to play in the second period and responded with baskets from Tessa Boagni, Serafina Maulupe and Fluker to close to with 15 at the break. Fluker had six points and seven rebounds at the break for CSUN.Â
The second half proved much more fruitful for CSUN on the offensive end. Maulupe opened the third period with a 3-pointer, was fouled on the play and knocked down the free throw to cut the lead to 11. With Fresno State nursing a 40-28 lead with 3:19 left in the third, Fluker scored on a lay-up and Tanabe knocked down a 3-pointer to draw within seven. Fresno State would actually take the lead back to nine points at the end of 30 minutes.
In the fourth, CSUN started really clicking after a pair of Bulldog free throws with 7:32 left to play. Tanabe canned another 3-pointer, Boagni knocked down a free throw and Cheyenne Allen connected on a 3-pointer of her own with 6:05 to play to bring the Matadors to within five. Trailing 54-50, Boagni hit another jumper and Maulupe drained a 3-pointer to give CSUN a 55-54 lead with 2:24 to play.Â
The teams traded some empty possessions until Fluker put CSUN up three with an offensive rebound and put-back with 36 seconds left to play. Boagni and Maulupe then went 4-of-6 at the free throw line and a late Fresno State 3-pointer did not matter.Â
The win was CSUN's first in the series with Fresno State since a 59-58 victory on Feb. 8, 1975. The Bulldogs had won the previous 15 match-ups in the series entering Friday night.Â
Tanabe finished 5-of-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from downtown while adding four rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes. Fluker was 6-of-15 from the field and matched her career best with 19 boards for the third time.Â
Maulupe was 3-of-13 from the field and 3-of-10 from 3-point range, but was also 4-of-5 from the free throw line. She had five rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes. Boagni was 5-of-11 from the field and added nine rebounds and three assists. Freshman Eliza Matthews added eight rebounds in addition to two big free throws in the third period.Â
The Matadors finished at 30.2 percent (22-of-73) overall from the field and held Fresno State to 8-of-38 shooting from the field in the second half. The Bulldogs finished at 31.9 percent (22-of-69) and Bego Faz Davalos had a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocked shots in the loss.Â
CSUN now sets its sights on No. 10 Stanford. The Matadors and Cardinal will tangle on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 11:30 a.m. at Maples Pavilion.
