Freshman Hayley Tanabe Leads CSUN with 16 Points and Seven Rebounds
STANFORD, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (2-2) lost 88-54 to No. 10 Stanford Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavilion. Freshman Hayley Tanabe continued a strong weekend with a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds and fellow rookie Lizzy Tonks added 10 points and three rebounds, but the Cardinal shot 47.8 percent from the field, including a 55.6 percent clip in the second half, and had 27 second-chance points to turn back the Matadors.Â
Coming off an historic win at Fresno State on Friday, the Matadors got off to a slow start in their third meeting ever with the Cardinal. CSUN shot 8-of-31 (25.8 percent) in the first half and trailed 41-23 at halftime. The second half saw CSUN's shooting improve, but the Cardinal upper their percentage as well and finished 33-of-69 from the field and 17-of-20 (85 percent) from the free throw line.Â
Tanabe turned in another strong performance on the road against a top opponent. The rookie finished 6-of-10 from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point range to lead the Matadors in scoring for the second-straight game. Both her 16 points and seven rebounds on Sunday represent new career highs and she is averaging 10.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest.Â
Tonks finished in double-figures for the third time in four games this season, going 4-of-12 from the field and adding a pair of free throws for 10 points. She is averaging 9.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game on the season.Â
Channon Fluker added eight points and two rebounds while Claudia Ramos made her season debut and responded with five points. Nautica Morrow recorded a career-high five steals and Lauren Shymkewicz had two points and two rebounds.Â
Stanford held a 52-29 advantage in rebounds and that helped the Cardinal produce 27 second-chance points and 52 points in the paint. The Cardinal also got 44 points from their bench compared to 14 from the Matador reserves. CSUN did force 13 Cardinal turnovers and those miscues resulted in 12 points for the Matadors.Â
CSUN returns to action on Friday, Nov. 25 as part of the Radisson Hotel Chatsworth Thanksgiving Basketball Classic 2016. On Nov. 25 and Nov. 26, the Matadors welcome in Delaware, Michigan State and Detroit Mercy to the San Fernando Valley for a pair of games each day at The Matadome.
