Balanced Attack Leads CSUN Past Detroit Mercy at Thanksgiving Classic

Four Matadors Score in Double-Figures to Down Titans
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (3-2) defeated Detroit Mercy 76-67 Friday evening as part of the Radisson Chatsworth Thanksgiving Basketball Classic 2016 at The Matadome. Four Matadors finished in double-figures offensively, including 18 points from both Channon Fluker and Serafina Maulupe, to set up a meeting with No. 19 Michigan State for the Tournament Championship at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26.Â
Squaring off with the Titans for the first time in program history, the Matadors displayed a balanced offensive attack to post the victory. Maulupe set a pair of CSUN career highs in the victory, finishing 8-of-15 from the field and with nine rebounds. She also tied a season-high with four assists and two steals in 31 minutes of action. Â Fluker was 9-of-15 from the field and added eight rebounds. She tied a career high with five blocked shots and is averaging a team-high 14.4 points per game on the season.Â
Senior Emily Cole had a stellar night, tying a career high with five 3-pointers. She finished with 15 points and had a season-high six rebounds and two steals in the win. Cole now has 92 career 3-pointers and needs eight more to become the eighth player in program history to reach 100 for a career.Â
Sophomore Nautica Morrow provided a spark off the bench as well, posting 12 points and a season-high five rebounds. She went 5-of-10 from the field and added two assists in 26 minutes of work.Â
The Matadors and Titans played a competitive first quarter that ended with CSUN holding an 18-16 advantage. CSUN then put together a 12-0 run to start the second period as Maulupe scored seven straight and Cole connected from downtown. The lead got as big as 17 after a Cole 3-pointer with 55 seconds left and the Mataadors held a 44-32 advantage at halftime.Â
In the third period, both teams scored 10 points in the paint as CSUN protected its double-digit lead. In the fourth, Morrow gave CSUN an 18-point lead with just over seven minutes to play before Detroit fought back to eventually cut the final difference to nine points.Â
Freshman Hayley Tanabe had a career-high seven assists to go with two points and three rebounds and junior Tessa Boagni recorded nine rebounds, four points and two blocked shots.
The Matadors finished at an even 44 percent (33-of-75) from the field and had 51 rebounds. The Titans went 25-of-68 (36.8 percent) with 43 rebounds.Â
CSUN will now set its sights on nationally ranked Michigan State. The Spartans defeated Delaware 81-64 in the opening game of the tournament. Tip off is slated for 4 p.m. and the game will be followed by a Delaware-Detroit Mercy contest at approximately 6:30 p.m.Â
