CSUN Falls Just Short in Upset Bid vs. No. 19 Michigan State

Sophomore Channon Fluker Leads Matadors with 23 Points, 14 Rebounds
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (3-3) lost 63-59 to No. 19 Michigan State in the Radisson Chatsworth Thanksgiving Basketball Classic Championship game Saturday afternoon at The Matadome. Sophomore Channon Fluker recorded a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds to earn All-Tournament Team honors, but several turnovers down the stretch undid CSUN's chance to post a win over the nationally ranked Spartans.Â
Tied at 59 and with the shot clock turned off, CSUN looked to be in prime position to post a victory over the Big Ten Conference for the second-straight season. Unfortunately, Branndais Agee made a nice play to steal the ball and after she was fouled, knocked down two free throws to give the Spartans the lead. Another CSUN turnover ended any hopes of an upset as Tori Jankoska knocked down a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession.Â
Fluker was 8-of-18 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Five of her game-high 14 rebounds came on the offensive glass and she is now averaging 15.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game for the season.Â
Fellow sophomore Nautica Morrow came off the bench to post 11 points, five rebounds and two steals in 21 minutes. Junior Tessa Boagni had a solid all-around line, recording eight points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots in 31 minutes of work. Freshman Hayley Tanabe had four points, four assists and three rebounds in 31 minutes.Â
The game was tight early with Michigan State holding a 15-11 advantage after 10 minutes of action. CSUN opened the second period with a 7-0 run to take an 18-15 lead with 6:24 to play in the half. Michigan State fought back, the teams exchanged baskets and a lay-up from Tanabe with 21 seconds left brought CSUN to within 33-29 at halftime.Â
Morrow put CSUN ahead 38-37 with 4:32 left in the third period and then Boagni connected on a 3-pointer with 3:15 left in the period to give CSUN a 43-41 lead. The Matadors scored the last four points of the third on a pair of lay-ups from Fluker.Â
CSUN finished the game shooting 35 percent (21-of-60) from the field and 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from 3-point range. The Spartans finished at 38.3 percent (23-of-60) and 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from 3-point range. The Matadors held a 43-34 advantage in rebounds, scored 11 second-chance points and had 26 points in the paint.Â
CSUN returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 1 with a contest at Northern Arizona. Tip off is slated for 11 a.m. (MT) / 10 a.m. (PT) and the game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Primeticket.Â
