CSUN Outlasts NAU 83-79 Behind 20 from Maulupe and Boagni

Juniors Tessa Boagni and Serafina Maulupe Score 20 Points
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (4-3) defeated Northern Arizona 83-79 in a non-conference game Thursday morning at The Walkup Skydome. Juniors Tessa Boagni and Serafina Maulupe each had 20 points, sophomore Cheyenne Allen added 14 off the bench and the Matadors held off a late Lumberjack charge to secure the victory.Â
In front of thousands of elementary students as part of NAU's Field Trip Day, the Matadors made six of their final seven field goal attempts to stave off NAU. With CSUN nursing a 63-62 lead, Channon Fluker made a jumper and Boagni and Lizzy Tonks each added a 3-pointer to stretch the lead back to seven.Â
The Lumberjacks continued to fight back and cut the lead to 75-71 before Fluker added another bucket. Down the stretch, Allen had a big field goal and a free throw to put the game out of reach.Â
Maulupe tied her CSUN career high with 20 points and tied a season high with four 3-pointers, three of which came in the second half. She added five rebounds and an assist in the victory.Â
Boagni set a new season high with her 20 points and had 13 at halftime for the Matadors. She set a new career high with three 3-pointers and had a team-high seven rebounds and two steals.Â
Allen had her best game of the season, finishing 6-of-10 from the field to finish with a season-high 14 points. She added five rebounds and three assists in 22 minutes.Â
In the first half, CSUN jumped out to a big lead on a 13-4 to close out the first period. In the second period, CSUN led by as many as 16 following free throws from Lizzy Tonks, but Northern Arizona closed the half on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 40-31 at halftime. Tessa Boagni had 13 points in the first half, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Channon Fluker had a team-high five rebounds.Â
Fluker finished with seven points, six rebounds and three assists while Emily Cole knocked down three 3-pointers to give her 95 for her career, tying for the eighth-most in program history. Lauren Shymkewicz came off the bench to post two of CSUN's four blocked shots.Â
The Matadors finished at 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the field and 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from 3-point range. NAU went 28-of-66 (42.4 percent) and 9-of-25 (36 percent) from 3-point range. The Lumberjacks held a 35-33 advantage in rebounds.Â
CSUN returns home for its next contest, a 6:30 p.m. meeting with Eastern Washington at The Matadome on Saturday, Dec. 3. The game is part of a CSUN basketball doubleheader with the men's program taking on Idaho State at 4 p.m.Â
