Sophomore Channon Fluker Posts 18 Points and 11 Rebounds

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team defeated The Master's University 74-53 Friday night in an exhibition contest at The Matadome. Sophomore Channon Fluker recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Emily Cole added 14 points and four 3-pointers and the Matadors forced 24 turnovers by the Lady Mustangs as they unofficially opened the 2016-17 season.Â
Picked to finish in the middle of the Big West by the league's coaches and media, the Matadors tipped off their 2016-17 season with a convincing victory over the visiting Lady Mustangs. CSUN also avenged a loss to The Master's from a year ago, controlling the game with 24 offensive rebounds and by committing only six turnovers.Â
Fluker was 9-of-14 from the field and seven of her 11 rebounds came on the offensive glass. She added three blocked shots and an assist in 19 minutes of work. Cole finished with 14 points and added two offensive rebounds, two assists and a steal in 25 minutes of work.Â
The first half saw the teams trade baskets and the Matadors held a narrow 15-14 advantage after 10 minutes of action. In the second period, the Lady Mustangs pulled ahead by four point with just over five minutes left in the period. CSUN responded with a run that was punctuated by a Claudia Ramos 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a 43-31 lead into halftime.
In the second half, CSUN continued to clamp down defensively and held The Master's to 1-of-12 shooting from the field in the third period. By time the final buzzer sounded, CSUN had out-scored TMU 31-22 in the second half en route to the 21-point victory.Â
Junior Serafina Maulupe was the third Matadors in double-figures, posting 13 points to go with five rebounds, five assists and two steals in 28 minutes of work. She and freshman Lizzy Tonks each had two 3-pointers in the victory and the rookie added eight points, four assists and two steals in 26 minutes. Â Another junior, Tessa Boagni, finished with 10 rebounds, seven points and two blocked shots while Cheyenne Allen added six points, three rebounds and three assists.Â
As a team, CSUN shot 36 percent (31-of-86) from the field and 30 percent (9-of-30) from 3-point range. The Matadors finished with 40 points in the paint and 27 points off the Lady Mustangs' 24 turnovers. The Master's University finished at 26.1 percent (12-of-46) from the field and 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from 3-point range.Â
The Matadors officially open the year on Friday, Nov. 11 with a 4 p.m. contest against Portland State at The Matadome. The game is part of a CSUN basketball doubleheader as the men's team will face Pomona-Pitzer following the conclusion of the CSUN-Portland State contest.
