Serafina Maulupe Leads Matadors with 17 Points
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (4-4) lost 71-57 to Eastern Washington Saturday night in a non-conference contest at The Matadome. Junior Serafina Maulupe led the Matadors with 17 points, but the Eagles proved too lethal offensively for CSUN to mount a comeback.Â
In a game that featured 11 lead changes and six ties, Eastern Washington held CSUN at bay after a 19-19 first period. The Eagles went on a 7-3 run to open the second period and scored the final five points of the half to take a 35-31 lead after 20 minutes.Â
In the second half Maulupe hit a 3-pointer to draw the Matadors to within 37-36, but the Eagles responded with a 10-0 run to stretch the lead to 11. The Matadors would get no closer than eight the rest of the way in defeat.Â
Maulupe was 6-of-11 from the field and tied a season-high for the third time with four 3-pointers. She added five rebounds, three assists and a steal in 26 minutes of work.Â
Channon Fluker just missed a double-double, posting 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Five of her boards came on the offensive glass and she is averaging 14.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per game on the season.Â
Nautica Morrow was the third CSUN player in double-figures, coming off the bench to score 14 points. She also had three steals and two rebounds in 20 minutes of work.Â
CSUN shot 23-of-57 (40.4 percent) from the field compared to 24-of-43 (55.8 percent) for Eastern Washington. The Matadors committed 24 turnovers that resulted in 23 points for the Eagles, although CSUN held a 30-18 advantage in points in the paint.Â
Eastern Washington also took advantage at the free throw line, finishing 18-of-22 (81.8 percent) compared to 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) for the Matadors.Â
CSUN will need to regroup quickly as it hits the road for contests next week at nationally ranked Washington (Dec. 7) and another Big Sky Conference team in Weber State (Dec. 9). Upon returning from the game with the Wildcats, CSUN will have a break for final exams before resuming non-conference play at Saint Mary's (Dec. 19). The Matadors host Southern Utah on Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. for their next home game.Â
