CSUN Downs Saint Mary's For First Time Since 1981

Junior Serafina Maulupe leads Matadors with 21 Points
MORAGA, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (6-5) defeated Saint Mary's 73-61 Monday evening in a non-conference contest at McKeon Pavilion. Junior Serafina Maulupe led the Matadors with 23 points while sophomore Channon Fluker had 14 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks as CSUN posted its first win in the series with the Gaels since 1981. Â
Monday's contest was a tight affair between the two schools as the game featured seven lead changes and five ties. With the score 46-45 in CSUN's favor, freshman Lizzy Tonks ripped off six-straight points to give the Matadors a 52-45 lead with 7:52 left to play. With the lead still at seven, Fluker scored a lay-up and junior Tessa Boagni buried a 3-pointer to give the Matadors a 12-point advantage.Â
The Gaels would get no closer than nine the rest of the way and CSUN made the majority of its free throws to seal the victory. The Matadors made 11-of-18 from the free throw line compared to 12-of-23 for Saint Mary's.
Maulupe finished 6-of-15 from the field and 4-of-10 from 3-point range. She added three rebounds, an assist and a steal in 31 minutes of work. Fluker was 6-of-13 from the field and 12 of her boards came on the defensive glass. Tonks recorded six points, six assists and five rebounds in 32 minutes of work.Â
In the first half, CSUN trailed early and fell behind 22-15 after 10 minutes of action. The second quarter saw the Matadors fight back and they took their first lead of the game on a 3-pointer from Maulupe with 5:39 left in the period. With the score tied at 31, Hayley Tanabe connected on a 3-pointer as the half closed and CSUN carried a 34-32 lead into the locker room.Â
Although Saint Mary's held a 49-45 advantage in rebounding, the Matadors finished 12-of-26 from 3-point range (46.2 percent). Senior Emily Cole led CSUN with nine points in the first half with nine points off three 3-pointers. She now has 103 for her career and ranks seventh in program history.Â
The win was CSUN's first in the series since a 95-63 win on Dec. 19, 1981 and snapped a 10-game losing streak to Saint Mary's.Â
For its next game, CSUN returns home to host Southern Utah on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m.Â
