Channon Fluker Leads Matadors with 24 points, 12 Rebounds
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (6-6) lost 77-71 to Southern Utah Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at The Matadome. Sophomore Channon Fluker recorded her seventh double-double of the season with a team-high 24 points and 12 rebounds, but the sharp-shooting Thunderbirds found success on the offensive end and forced 21 Matador turnovers to claim their 16th-straight win in the series.Â
Looking for their first win against their former Big Sky Conference rivals since 1991, the Matadors looked to be in good shape early in the contest. CSUN jumped out to a 19-10 lead and started 7-of-9 from the field midway through the first period. To their credit, Southern Utah fought back and closed the gap to 25-20 after 10 minutes of work.Â
The second quarter proved less fruitful for the Matadors, who finished 4-of-16 from the field, including 2-of-11 on two-point attempts. Southern Utah responded by scoring 20 points in the period and the Thunderbirds took a 40-36 lead into halftime.Â
In the second half, the Matadors continued to struggle defensively. Despite shooting 46.2 percent in the third period, turnovers did in CSUN and the Matadors were outscored 23-15 in the period. CSUN tried its best to rally in the fourth period and outscored the Thunderbirds 20-15 over the final 10 minutes, but the deficit was too much to overcome.Â
Fluker finished 10-of-18 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line in 26 minutes of work. Seven of her 12 rebounds came on the offensive glass and she added three blocks and two assists. She is averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 10.8 rebounds per game through 12 contests.Â
Freshman Eliza Matthews just missed her first career double, finishing with a career-high nine points and 11 rebounds. She was 4-of-8 from the field and added a block in 24 minutes of action. Sophomore Cheyenne Allen also had nine points and freshman Hayley Tanabe finished with eight off the bench for CSUN.Â
The Matadors finished at 38.2 percent (26-of-68) from the field compared to 45.2 percent (28-of-62) for Southern Utah. The Matadors won the rebounding battle 47-34, but the Thunderbirds scored 18 points off 21 turnovers and held an 8-0 advantage in fastbreak points.Â
CSUN is off for the holiday break and will return to action with a road game against Seattle at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 29. The Matadors then return home to host Penn on New Year's Eve at 4 p.m. with free admission for all fans.Â
