Channon Fluker Posts 30 Points, 19 Rebounds in Victory
OGDEN, Utah --- The CSUN women's basketball team (5-5) defeated Weber State 89-78 Friday evening in a non-conference contest at the Dee Events Center. Sophomore Channon Fluker led four Matadors in double-figures with a season-high 32 points and matched a career high with 19 rebounds as CSUN defeated Weber State for the first time in 16 years.
Facing their former Big Sky Conference rival for the first time since 2001, the Matadors put together a stellar offensive performance in defeating the Wildcats. CSUN shot 31-of-61 (50.8 percent) from the field and 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from 3-point range. CSUN also held a 52-36 advantage on the boards, grabbing 16 offensive boards to finish with 20 second-chance points.Â
Senior Emily Cole went a perfect 5-for-5 from 3-point range to finish with 15 points and become just the eighth player in CSUN women's basketball history to amass 100 for her career. The five treys tied a career high and she also added a season-high seven rebounds.Â
Fluker was dominant all night on the interior, going 12-of-16 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. The 19 board matches her career high for the fourth time and the second time this season. Â
Freshman Lizzy Tonks had a solid game as well, posting 14 points to go with a career-high eight assists. She knocked down two 3-pointers and also had four rebounds in 32 minutes of work. Junior Serafina Maulupe was the fourth Matador to score in double-figures, posting 11 points and two rebounds.Â
After a 13-13 first period, CSUN went on a 10-5 run to start the second period. Weber State cut the lead back to one later in the frame, but the Matadors responded and led 39-34 at halftime.Â
In the third period, the Matadors started on a 11-5 run, but Weber State fought back and cut the lead to three with 1:13 left in the period. Cole then knocked down a 3-pointer and Eliza Matthews knocked down a pair of free throws to push the lead back to eight.Â
The fourth saw CSUN extend its lead to as many as 17 at one point before Weber State cut the deficit to 11 at the final buzzer.Â
Matthews returned to action after missing five games due to injury and responded with 8 points, five rebounds and two assists. Fellow freshman Hayley Tanabe came off the bench to post three points, three rebounds and six assists before fouling out.Â
CSUN takes a break for final exams before returning to the court on Dec. 19 with a road game at Saint Mary's. Tip off between the Gaels and Matadors is set for 6:30 p.m.Â
