Matadors Fall at No. 1 USC

No. 25 CSUN Water Polo suffered a 15-3 defeat at the hands of the top-ranked USC Trojans, 15-3, on Saturday afternoon. Amy Yule, Katelyn Fairchild and Emily Fuller each tallied goals in the match while Fairchild led CSUN with four steals.

After each team went scoreless in the opening minutes, USC picked up a pair of tallies to jump out to a 2-0 lead at the 5:15 mark of the first period. The Matadors responded quickly with a score just 00:26 later as Yule found the netting. With its lead trimmed to one, USC went on the attack and finished the period strong with a pair of goals to stretch its advantage to 4-1.

Heading into the match on Saturday, the Matadors had been outscored 28-19 in the second period of games thus far on the season. Against the Trojans, CSUN would again struggle in the second quarter as USC outscored the Matadors 5-0 in the period to build a comfortable 9-1 lead at the half. USC kept the run going after intermission with four-straight scores over the first 4:27 to go up 13-1.

The Matadors finally broke the dry spell when Fairchild registered a tally at the 1:20 mark of the third. Just 00:23 later, Fuller cut the deficit to 13-3 but CSUN would not get any closer for the remainder of the day. The Trojans held CSUN scoreless over the final 8:00 to post the 15-3 victory.

Both Fairchild and Madeleine Sanchez each posted assists in the match while Yule, Sanchez, Shannon Hovanesian and Alexis Elias each had a steal. Niki Van Vugt registered a nine-steal day in front of the cage.

The Matadors next travel to UC Irvine to compete in the UCI Invitational. CSUN will be one of 16 teams participating in the two-day tournament beginning Saturday morning. The Matadors will get another crack at top-ranked USC as the teams will do battle to start the day at 8:00 a.m. from Anteater Aquatics Complex. Later in the day, CSUN will compete either against Arizona State or host UC Irvine with the time of the match to be determined.Â
