SIMI VALLEY, CA - Freshman Cake Phuchanbanchob carded a five-over 77 and is second after one round of the Matador Invitational Monday at Wood Ranch G.C.
As a team, the Matadors sit fifth after posting a team round of 331.
With strong winds throughout Ventura County that peaked at 59 mph, teams struggled on the Wood Ranch layout. Several of the 63 players in the 10-team field were not able to complete the second round before darkness fell. Those players will complete the final holes of the suspended second round Tuesday morning before playing the final round.
Phuchanbanchob's score of 77 trails only Santa Clara's Kristin Le who leads by one shot at four-over 76. Only 10 players managed to break 80 in Monday's windy conditions.
"Cake does a real nice job of managing the moment that's right in front of her," said CSUN head coach Gina Umeck. "That really helped her on a day like today when you can't dwell on the past."
Junior Cesilie Hagen is also in striking distance of the lead after one round as she carded a seven-over 79. Hagen is currently tied for sixth with four other players.
Also for CSUN, Chaiwon Youn, competing as an individial, is tied for 28th at 13-over 85. Freshman Ysabel Tran is tied for 39th at 15-over 87, Arinda Bhanaraksa is tied for 43rd at 16-over 88, Julie Ward is 50th at 18-over 90 and Shenna DeLeon is tied for 54th at 22-over 94.
Teams will begin play Tuesday morning at 7 a.m.
