CSUN Water Polo takes a week off from its regular season schedule this weekend as the Matadors host their annual alumni game on Saturday at Matador Pool at 12 p.m.
Â
The game marks the return of some of the best water polo players in team history as the alumni meet the 2016 Matadors in friendly competition. The two teams battled in a back-and-forth contest at Matador Pool last season with the match ending in an 11-11 tie. Some of the returning Matadors include Marisa Young (2012-15), Kelcie Ferreira (2012-15), Kiernan Davis (2012-15), Lindy Duncan (2011-14), Jenny Jamison (2011-14), Celena Photopulos (2011-14) and Colleen Garcia (2003).
Â
In the CSUN record books, Young and Duncan are second and third in goals scored with 217 and 211 respectively while Jamison is sixth with 169 and Ferreira sits in ninth place with 142. Young is also the all-time leader in field blocks with 103 while Duncan is first in assists with 196. Defensive stalwarts Ferreira and Davis also are atop the CSUN Top 10 lists in steals and saves. Ferreira is second all-time in steals with 289 and Davis is second in career saves with 786.
Â
The game on Saturday marks the halfway point of the season with CSUN entering the weekend 6-12. The Matadors have faced a challenging schedule in 2016 with 13 of their 18 opponents ranked in the Top 25 nationally.
Â
Sophomore attacker Madeleine Sanchez continues to lead the team in scoring with 37 goals on 46.8 percent shooting. She is also second in steals (28), third in assists (17) and third in field blocks (5). Center Amy Yule has been a threat in the pool all season long on the offensive end as she is second in goals with 24 and first in earned ejections with 33.
